CCL - February 15 - Santos de Guapiles (Away)

So is kickoff confirmed for 8 pm on the nose? Trying to plan out what to watch live versus tape

We go through this pretty often, I'm wondering if maybe LionNYC LionNYC should begin including KO time (if/when available) into the "1st post" of these games?

Probably 8:05 or so, I wouldn't be completely convinced the MLS site is correct in this instance since it isn't their game. TV coverage starts at 8, and I seem to remember there being an open, lineups, etc -- so figure 8:05, 8:08, somewhere in there. There's another game at 10, so I don't think it'll be anything like 8:20.

That sounds about right: 8:07 p.m. or so. No later than that. A little intro, the lineups and anthems, a few commercials, kickoff.

Haak is going to see a lot of the field this year. He’s already an answer to one of my season prognostication questions

Right on time.

So ironic to be in a big park with no crowd. Neither of our home stadiums qualified under CONCACAF rules, and here we are in a cavern. :D

It's so dumb. It's hard to take this competition seriously when they play it in neutral sites because they won't allow home stadiums. CONCACAF just makes this tournament look small and unimportant when the attendance is in the hundreds like this. It's pitiful. Looks -- and sounds -- like a preseason scrimmage.

It's just weird. It's not actually a "no home teams" rule, though. It has to do with stadium capacity more than anything. For instance, the Revs are playing both their ties in Gilette -- they're the home team for one and away team for the other.

I think Yankee Stadium was out because it's not soccer-specific. Santos couldn't play at home because it was too small (although it would have been packed for this one).

I think the issue with Yankee Stadium is that they can't cover up non-CONCACAF sponsors in center field. I don't think soccer specific is necesssarily the issue.

NE was scheduled to play both games at home because the security situation in Haiti made playing there too complicated. That's the only one that made sense, frankly. The others are CONCACAF being a bit much.

That's right, I forgot about the sponsorship thing.

I did know about the Gilette scheduling being affected by Haiti. Had the game come off down there I think it would have been in their national stadium.

It's all just so CONCACAF-fy. "Let's get haughty about the venues and then have no one there" sounds about right.

Exactly. And it really makes the tournament look and feel so small and insignificant. Imagine scrolling through and seeing this scene. You'd think it was a preseason game. Ronny made so many comments about how important it is to play CCL games, imagine going from UCL to this. CONCACAF looks like a joke.

With the amount of people that were at the PUMAS game at yankee stadium, even after the insane rain delay, I think if we were allowed to host CCL at yankee stadium it would be an amazing experience. But fuck concacaf because "stadium"

100 percent. Would we sell the place out? Probably not in February. But the idea that Yankee Stadium is not a suitable stadium for this event is short-sighted and wrong. Same with Santos's stadium. How cool that a team with a 3,000 capacity stadium is in this competition! We should celebrate that, not force them to play a 90-minute drive away. It's asinine. Truly asinine. CONCACAF has to be the worst-run confederation. They are so in the weeds it's not even funny. They all-but destroy this competition by making decisions like this. This felt like a preseason friendly. It was, frankly, boring to watch. The TV broadcasts suck, the atmospheres suck, and it's any wonder MLS teams even want to compete in it. Going from the UCL to this today ... man. Brutal. CONCACAF is a joke.

As for the game, hard to really make a lot of judgements based on the opponent. This felt like a leg-stretching kind of game. I think the biggest thing we can take is that Taty looks happy and hungry.
