City in the Boroughs - Bronx & Westchester

RJ, do you like playing at LB? And to follow up, Patrick, why don't you play RJ at RB?
RJ: "I'm comfortable playing where coach puts me."
PV: "right side.... Left side.... To the opponent he's on the right, not the left... What is the difference - he's on the outside and what is important is how he's engaged with the game and it all starts with being humble and playing from the back."

Well said.

And this is pretty much why I never listen to player or coach interviews and put very little stock in what they say publicly. Even in this type of non-media event, you are going to get limited degrees of candor (which I view as the right "business" decision from the coach and player, in any event). I hate when, for example, Extra Time Radio spends 20 minutes talking to just any player and you learn virtually nothing.

Or, when they interviewed Nelson Rodriguez, the Chicago GM (and pretty clearly a smart guy) a few weeks back and he kept talking about how they want to bring in a DP, but it needs to be the "right" player. I don't blame him for not saying more, but is anyone actually interested in hearing that?

Watching the DC games from Pitchside, it was so ugly seeing RJ being so open so often and having to cross with his right foot while on the left side.

That was a lot of fun and I would recommend it highly.

Most interesting moments/answers:

Very first question was directed at RJ on the LB/RB question. He said he felt his left foot wasn't bad and he was happy to help the team any way he could. Vieira then interrupted to say how happy he was that he had versatile players. But then the questioner followed up by referencing the video above and Viera clearly remembered exactly when he had said it and said something like "RJ beat his man 1v1 and I felt he had time even though it was on his left foot so . . . " Maybe you had to be there but it felt like Vieira was a little defensive on this question - or maybe not just defensive, but enthusiastic

In response to question about the best moment with the club both RJ and Vieira said the last game against DC.

In response to question about turning points in the season RJ said finally beating the Red Bulls and Vieira said losing 7-0 to the Red Bulls and the teams response.

In response to question about the best and worst of Yankee Stadium all three mentioned the history as the best and Vieira seemd to imply that the size of the field was not ideal for the way the team wanted to play, whereas RJ downplayed it.

Someone asked about the goal of having stadium by the fourth season and Patricof essentially said that was not a realistic timeline. This and other answers made it very clear that the stadium is an extremely high priority for them. While it may be reading too much into things, it appeared they may have feel their most realistic options are in the Bronx and Queens.

I asked about the Us Open cup game and whether Vieira felt that that he would take a different approach next year of if this was simply an unfortunate result. He said he felt he put out a team with enough talent to win but they had a poor game and the result was unfortunate.

Rox asked a great follow up question about the match vs the Cosmos and Mix. Vieira said he didn't feel that the result could be blamed on any one player and ended by saying it was a great learning experience for him and his approach would be different next year.

All three said they want to win trophies.

A woman at the front had an excellent final question about facing the Red Bulls in the playoffs that received a disappointing (though totally understandable) non-answer.

TR's twitter feed made it sound like Patricof implied that there had been recent conversations with community groups - did you get that sense at all from his answer?

I haven't seen their post so I may have simply not heard it as audio was pretty bad but - no. If they are referring to what I think they may be referring to, I didn't take him to be saying anything more than that queens supporters were eager to have a stadium there.

I asked about youth development. How youth soccer is expensive, and what the team is doing to attract those who dont have the means

What did they say?

That it was a good question?

They mentioned how NYCFC has teamed up with the nyc to build fields, and that with running programs for these kids they can transition them to one of their youth teams which will be of no cost to their families.

Also when getting an authograph from PV he mentioned the US has great potential to win WC if we can find these kids like France did when they won. That US is a big immigrant country with tons of hidden gems.

Their Academy teams are free to play. If they spend any $$$ scouting, over time the teams should be made up more and more of kids from outside their pay-to-play affiliate network. You'll start seeing a lot more Port Chester and White Plains and a lot less World Class and NYSC.

Thanks Lasker for summarizing. I will just chime in to add that during his opening remarks, Vieira talked about how he wants the team and the club to have a good relationship with the fans, which is one reason why they hold the borough forums. He specifically said that he saw it deteriorate at Arsenal, something he didn't want to see happen with NYCFC.

On the question about RB, I actually thought Vieira was as candid as he could be, but enthusiastic/happy to explain his choices. Not necessarily defensive, in a negative way. When the follow-up questioner asked about the 'why can't you put the ball in the box' clip, and whether that was evidence that RJ is weaker on his other foot, he said no, it was just because RJ made the wrong decision at that moment. I think you had to be there/hear it from him directly to get a feel for how it was explained.

Also, at one point Patricof said "We pay attention to the forums. Forums like these." Interpret that how you will (confirmed: an intern is paid to read these forums and report back to the front office)

Any chance Schrodinger's Pride Night came up at all? Didn't think to suggest it until after I left the office yesterday.

Good additions, can't believe I forgot he line about the forums!

"Defensive" was the wrong word. "Surprisingly happy/eager to explain his choices" or "confident in his decisions and confident you will agree" might have been more apt. Basically the whole RJ exchange was positive.

One more thing I just remembered: someone asked him what he had learned from coaches he had played for. He cited Wenger's openness to players and Mourinho's willingness to take responsibility for tough decisions.

Does anyone know what he was referring to about Arsenal and fans?

Disclaimer: definitely NOT an Arsenal (Woolwich) fan

There's lots of animosity from the fan base at Wenger for not spending, not bringing in players and not really living up to their expectations. They would lose games they're expected to win and he would just continue saying he's the right person for the job and they have a long term plan.

Depending on who you ask he's either pretty aloof, or willfully ignorant, about fans complaints that they haven't lived up to their expectations such as winning the Premier League or making it past the first knockout round of the Champions League, saying things the likes of "if i'm not good I'll be fired but I'm still here"

Imagine the reaction to Kreis last year saying "Yeah we didn't make the playoffs but it's fine because we have a plan that we're sticking to" and then not replacing Grabavoy this year.

Is Arsenal's unwillingness to spend the fault of Wegner or Arsenal's ownership? Arsenal is one of the most profitable teams in the Premier League and big reason behind that is they don't spend huge on transfers. They are touted as being one of the most well run clubs in the world for that exact reason.

Thanks for a good summary. I guess I was dimly aware of that, but I had assumed he was talking about something from back when he played for them
