I think Berhalter correctly assesses this Gold Cup as just one small part of a cycle which, if the US makes it to the Round of 16 in the 2022 WC, no one will give one single shit about in the long term.

That’s not the point. Having a lame duck interim manager for a year wasted all of the matches that were played under him because any player evaluation Sarachin did was tossed in the trash - the new coach will want to see for his own eyes and not trust the guy not hired as he had favorites.

Bradley is getting burned by the Curaçao midfield. Then at the end of the half he somehow decided to run from deep and pressure a centerback, which left a huge hole through which Curaçao attacked and drove all the way into the box.
He's progressing the ball pretty well but was a total defensive liability in the first half.

It's so clear that missing the World Cup wasn't unlucky, it's exactly what we deserved. And it's incredibly upsetting that nothing has changed. The national team program is in freefall.

Considering the successes of the youth programs, I would say that stating the program is in a free fall is a bit of a hyperbole.
But I do agree that the senior team needs to be a lot better.
This is basically the right take. We are still suffering the effects of under-investment in youth programs prior to the late 90s - an under-investment whose effects were masked by a few prodigies and foreigners bolstering the team for a while. Once we hit a dry spot the effects became clear.
Since the late 90s, however, MLS teams and others have invested a ton in academies and youth development, and the benefits are obvious - even if most of those guys aren't yet ready to play for the senior team.
It's also worth noting that Curacao is not as bad as people would think. All these guys grew up in the Netherlands and most were born there. It's like we played the Dutch B or C team, which is still going to be pretty good. Mind you, it's still a team we should beat by multiple goals, and we should never let them outplay us for any significant stretch. But, this is a team that should provide a decent challenge.

Ugh, this weather delay... We started this match with such fire. I hope we can keep up the intensity after this kink in the momentum.
What I really loved about our second goal was that it was all about our young guys. McKennie splits the entire Jamaica midfield with a through-ball to Morris, whose shot is wicked enough that all the keeper can do is parry it to the feet of Pulisic, who finishes. Great stuff.
When this tournament started I was worried that we couldn't hang with Mexico if we met in the final. After that match against Jamaica I feel a lot better about it.

While I have high hopes for Gio that he will be a great contributor to the USMNT in years to come, let’s maybe look more at those who have established themselves in the U-23’s and U-20’sJozy should be our starting striker until Sargent is ready to step up.
Bradley was the biggest liability on the field tonight. When he gets the ball it's 50/50 he's turning it over. Need Tyler Adams back and we'd be.

Unfortunately wouldn’t displace Bradley, being that he plays a different position, but yeah, I’d start looking at elevating Pomykal up to be the #10 which would allow Pulisic to play his normal wing position. Pomykal needs some time to gel with the senior players, but he was the field general for the U20’s with the ability to do just about everything on the field.
Edit: and it’s another testament to how damn good FC Dallas’ academy is.
