COVID-19 - Leagues Suspended

CDC is recommending 8 weeks ban of large public gatherings. That will extend the MLS suspension another month at minimum.

Trump's live stream with the task force right now - he's saying the "experts" say it'll probably be july/august before this is truly taken contained. that pretty much kills this season, if true. even if we are able to resume playing say end of june. That's half the season gone.

MLB is also trying to start up mid-May following the CDC’s 8 week recommendation. So that could still cause trouble for our season seeing as the MLB owners want to get the full 162 games in regardless of a late start on the season.

162 games is off the table if they start in mid-May or early June. The MLB season, and the MLS season, will almost certainly both be shortened. Figure right now we're looking at maybe 130 MLB games at the very most, probably closer to 120.

Looking at a whole lotta rotator cuff injuries if they add games to only half the length of schedule. Compressed recovery.

You seem to follow the data much closer than me. Have "community spread" cases been slower in warm weather climates? I know they haven't determined officially if summer will blunt this virus, but im curious if a pattern is emerging yet.
I haven’t followed Australia that closely but a buddy of mine said it’s wasn't showing the dying-off effect considering they’re in the summer. Who knows..... it could also be that we just haven’t had enough time pass to notice a drop since there are probably more infections out there than people tested, so while “new” cases are showing, it could still mean the decrease is happening but not enough daily tests are being done to accurately quantify the downward vector.

So yeah, could be a long summer for us hoping our social distancing and self quarantining shrinks the available medium for spreading. That, or I read today at least one euro pharma has already entered human trials for the vaccine so there’s that hope they can fast track the approval process. It always seems like the euro equivalent of the FDA rolls drugs out faster that we do, so we should hope the Europeans have their A-game on.

Crazy - first time I’ve seen those numbers to frame the extent. Yay Brooklyn being in the middle, no shame in coming in last with this.

The $64,000 question is the number of unconfirmed cases..... I’m really amazed with all of the teaching hospitals in the city, there isn’t a local lab that can crunch tests and help expedite the results.

Welp. Myself and 8 million other Bay Area residents are officially under mandatory shelter in place for the next three weeks. Only allowed to go out for essential items. Scary stuff with a 2.5 month old, but I think we are in a good spot.

I’m sure it’s getting crazy for all of you on the east coast, but maybe start planning for something similar. Grocery stores are absolutely nuts out here at the moment.

Stay safe everyone and help your neighbors if you are able!

yup, we are pretty much already there as of tonight

Went out for some additional supplies today. What a difference a few days makes. Shelves were significantly emptier and the meats were mostly cleared out.

Luckily I only needed things no one had interest in. But it was still a mad house.

Be safe out there everyone. It's gonna be a long road back to normalcy but we'll get there.

Rumor is there will be Nationwide mandatory 2 week lockdown.. to be announced in the next day or two

I heard those are fake. We'll find out soon, i guess.

i've heard from 3 different sources who didn't just read it on the internet somewhere. so there might be some truth to it. but like you said, we shall see. just hope everyone is prepared for it. shame i will have to work and meet my deadlines regardless of everything... *shakes fist in anger*

Edit: after doing some digging on my own, it seems my sources were probably relying on the fake message from the hacked HHS about a national shutdown. Maybe we'd still have one.. but it would probably be unrelated to the rumors flying around right now.

Also, I find it very interesting that we are on almost the exact trajectory with this virus as Italy. That's scary. Hope the Fed can get their act together soon so we don't end up like Italy in a week.

Yeah the supermarkets were crazy here last week -- I still have probably 15 days worth of food on hand, when I went last week I had to go to two different supermarkets because the first one was out of packaged meat. And basically the only places open here in New York are supermarkets and pharmacies. Restaurants are only open for take-out food.

The federal government lacks the general authority to order lockdowns or quarantines within states, including a general national quarantine. It is possible in extreme circumstances, but would require a declaration of emergency powers far beyond anything this country has seen and beyond what has been declared to date. While some local authorities are handling this better than others, and levels of being proactive vary, there is little evidence that enough local governments are handling it so poorly that the national government needs to assume new powers and step in. These are the basic powers of the states, and depending on each state, sometimes local county or city authorities if the states have shared that power with local governments. This is civics 101.

Further, if we were to get to that point, we would almost certainly see it go through steps. FIrst we could see a ban on travel to or from specific states with major hotspots. Then perhaps a general travel ban between states. Both of those are more clearly within the power of the federal government to impose without assuming new powers.

We’re still getting deliveries. They won’t stop. You have to time it either early morning or late night depending on delivery schedule. We are stocking before open and then we get some more mid day that get stocked by end of day. What sucks is everyone is on lockdown but we still have to go to work and be exposed to those coming in. Florida is just about at a full lockdown. They’re shutting down clubs and bars now for 30 days.

Thanks for reminding us all to think before we automatically trust/believe things we hear or read from non-official sources (not being sarcastic).

Yea. I am not freaking out by any means. Just reporting the situation as I see it here in midtown. I keep having to remind people that things will be restocked and in a week or two, the supply chain will catch up to the panic buying and there will be plenty of stuff.

definitely sucks for those who have to go out and work in this situation. hope you are taking all appropriate measures to take care of yourself.
