COVID-19 - Leagues Suspended

Which makes complete sense, because of course there were already infected people flying in from China in early January before anyone knew what was going on.
Yes.
But "before anyone knew what was going on" is bullshit, because I represented my company at the job fair in Stony Brook, out in long island, in mid-january. Even then, they were suggesting not to give handshakes and to purell after every interaction.

Stony Brook University has a lot of international students, specifically from China, and I know there are a bunch from the Wuhan area. They must have flown back before the new semester began.

I think the initial report about this was on New Year's Eve, and it started get a lot of media attention in January, but while experts were warning it could become a pandemic I don't think the vast majority of the public realized the danger until March.

True, but that doesn't mean it was "before anyone knew", because at that point in time the US govt should have already started at least thinking of it, but it sure doesn't seem like it

Per reports, the US govt was notified in November per their intelligence sources.

It should not have snuck up on anybody.

agreed. there have been several reports indicating US officials on the ground in China reporting what was happening and that it could get serious, but they were essentially ignored.

Yes. We had intelligence sources trying to warn our govt. at least two separate sources per reports.

Whichever of our three-letter agencies obtained it was way out in front of this.

This was in the news last week.

Things are getting better in NY and many other states that were hit early. There is reason to optimistic about some kind of restart to the MLS season, almost certainly without fans, at least at first. The problem is that other states were way earlier in the curve when they shut down and are opening up earlier too. We could easily end up in a situation where the northeast is in good shape for having games, while other states are back in lockdown. It's a big country, and not every region was going to roll along in the same way, and the differences seem likely to be more dramatic.
Things are not getting better in NY. They are getting worse at a slower rate.

Exactly my point. How the hell did we get to where we are?

Avian flu, swine flu, Ebola, SARS and MERS all arose in the last 20 years and fizzled out after early high projections. We were all conditioned to expect the same. Look at Fauci here in a long interview in January. He's clearly taking it seriously, but his basic message and demeanor is we're monitoring this but nobody should freak out. He's not saying that citizens or the government needs to do anything unusual.

WHO was basically sending the same message back then (and this is not based on whether they are CCP mouthpiece). WHO's message was it's a concern and we're on top of it. They got it wrong.

Here's an article by a science writer with a PhD in genetics again in January that has the same tone.

Not one public health expert suggested we restrict travel. They all said not to wear masks. Not one scientist or health expert suggested that we ramp up ventilator production or PPE. They failed, universally. Sometimes that just happens. Nature is full of things that want to kill us and since the invention of antibiotics we've let ourselves believe we have that controlled. We don't

We got to where we are because our federal government in this administration is completely inept. We have a president who refuses to hear any bad news, and so refused to hear the warnings that experts were giving about this, and thus never prepared for it when we had the time, and this completely screwed the entire country.

Sorry if was that too political, but I don't think any of it is unfair.

Oh, I was being rhetorical. I know exactly how we got here.

At that point you can go into all the theories over china + WHO etc, too much to discuss now.
