Well it was made clear that some might be traded. NYCFC have apparently passed on the waiver draft too. Still its been a very eventful day and very positive.

Well, we sent back Lovitz to Toronto for allocation money.

Gotta say, this being my first year following MLS, the rules of this league are wacky. It's like playing a manager simulator.

Can someone explain what allocation money is, and how it can be used? Why does NYCFC keep acquiring it when they need players?

This might help a bit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allocation_money

Basically the idea is that teams can use Allocation money to "buy down" a player's salary so that they can pay a normal player more than DP money or go over the cap, but what's on the books still remains under the cap. It can also be used to pay part of the transfer fee for international players.

I think it is basically like obtaining more cap space. Say you can spend $100 dollars total on your team. If you trade a player for $5 allocation money, it's like you can now spend $105 on your team.

When you add in Villa and Lampard, you are at $2. 63 Million. Room for another DP and 90,000 more. That's why that allocation money was so important today.

I know John George's option wasn't picked up so they will be able to negotiate that down a lot considering he's spent more time in a hospital bed then a pitch.

Yea I think an MLS example that would work would be say a team goes out and signs a player for 380k, they can then use lets say 200k in allocation money on that contract so only 180k would cap against the teams cap. Its basically another mechanism similar to the DP rule that allows teams to spend more money, which makes it a pretty hot commodity. It can be used for another things as well such as transfer fees, paying players, and to buy players with salaries that would be higher than allowed.

....That is right, correct?

That is also assuming the cap stays at where it is at. I would be shocked if that cap isn't 4 million or higher by the next CBA.
