Expansion Rumors Megathread

Just read the NBC sports take on this and they mentioned that maybe Beckham knew about the shit deal he'd get next to Marlins park and that's why he wanted no part of it from the beginning.

But now with Garber saying, your $25 million franchise fee is only good in Miami and you have 3 months to seal the deal. Maybe he's looking at it and realizing, "Well, a successful Miami club right now is probably worth $150 million dollars, at least, right now and god knows what it will be in the future."

So he's probably figuring, deal with it now, it won't be hard to be more successful than that PITIFUL Marlins team and next time we build a stadium, we'll be the ones making their life hell as we will be more valuable to the city.

Well he changes rules when his bosses tell him to. You know his bosses, the owners of MLS and NYCFC.
Thank you. I make this point all the time when people point to him he's the PR guy for enacting what they vote. Does he have ideas he pitches? Surely so. He's the consigliere for all 5 families. But he's just the consigliere. He ain't the boss.

After just watched John Oliver's great vid on stadiums, where he mocks the Marlins hardcore, it makes me think if Beckham just decided to buy his own land and build his own stadium he wouldn't be in the bind he is now.

Miami land isn't as cheap as Orlando land. You should really watch the Real Sports segment on Loria and the Marlins, it's quite ridiculous. It's almost up there with the Qatari sheik and the World Cup slums.

Miami is cheaper than NYC. Besides that's Becks problem not mine.

id like to think MLS gives franchises to cities that want to help, not just because they are in a sexy city that helps TV revenue one day.

This Miami deal has had all sorts of wrong from the start.

A little of column A and a little of column B.

You have your Salt Lakes, your Sacramentos, your Portlands....but you simply can't ignore cities like NY, LA, Miami, Chicago, and Houston in this country and hope to reach major league status.

Just on the surface I think teams are needed in San Antonio and Charlotte. With the understanding that Atlanta, Minneapolis and Miami do happen.

"In a recent preseason exhibition against the Cosmos, the defending champion Sacramento Republic played in front of 20,000 spectators." I believe it was against Cosmos at Hughes Stadium in February.

Their average attendance this season is 11,300 in a stadium with a capacity of 11,400.

A Sacramento vs Harrisburg TV Broadcast"which was planned and produced in less than a week, averaged a 1.6 household rating and a 2.4 rating in the key male 18-34 demographic. Republic FC’s 1.6 rating was better than two college football games that aired in the same time slot. The Notre Dame versus Syracusegame received a 1.5 rating and the Baylor versus Iowa State game had a 1.3 rating."

The broadcast won an Emmy for "Best Sporting Game Live/Unedited. The match aired live onCW31, Republic FC’s official broadcast partner, on Saturday, September 27, 2014."

Why is this club not in the expansion plans?

I can tell you they're working very hard to be in MLS' expansion plans.
They have a design, a location and financial backing for a downtown soccer-specific stadium.
They have, as you noted, a rabid fan base.

They're in the conversation, if not the plans, if you can discern a distinction.

It is in MLS plans. MLS is just giving LAFC, Miami and Minnesota first dibbs.

That's got to be a kick in the teeth for the NASL, to have one of their teams defecting to the USL as a stepping stone. At least when teams go directly to MLS it's fairly recognisable as a step up, but I can't imagine they think much of USL.

Looks like San Antonio has jumped to near the front of the expansion line. Apparently the county, city and the NBA Spurs have purchased the NASL Scorpions (or at least their stadium) plan to start a USL team for 2016 and get to MLS in the next few years. Pretty exciting for San Antonio fans.

I feel news has to be coming soon no? NASL is done and we are getting close to the new year so need to start building a squad. I also read they only had 1 player under contract for 2016.

I read the Scorpions owner, who sold the stadium hadn't renewed his NASL franchise rights for 2016. So I think the Scorpions are dead, long live the USL Spurs, I guess.

maybe just change the color scheme and keep the same mascot. call them "alacranes" which is spanish for scorpions :D

- Miami unsure of stadium location, but must have agreements in place by MLS owners meeting on Saturday.
- Sacramento released stadium plans and designs
- San Antonio Spurs and local government conclude purchase of Scorpions stadium, plans for USL then MLS unclear, no clarity on future of NASL team
- Minnesota preparing for state vote on tax exceptions, no problems anticipated. Rumor start in 2017 in temp location with Atlanta.
- Atlanta finalizes deal for academy/training facilities.
- LAFC announce hire of soccer director in next 2 months. Will announce crest/colors by next month. Stadium construction moves forward with approvals from various public entities.

That's your MLS expansion update!
