Expansion Rumors Megathread

It would probably be more Wednesday games not a longer season.
Extend the schedule by adding Wednesday games, probably an extension to 10 months/year, while also condensing the playoffs - each home/away series should be a Wed/Sat format so that it can be completed as fast as possible.

They should not do away with a home/away format during the regular season for teams in the same conference. That would be annoying from an attendance standpoint depending on whether teams suck and/or have players worth watching.

The Championship has 24 teams, so 46 league matches plus a few playoffs for promotion. If they can play that many, there's no reason MLS can't do it too:

32 teams, 2 conferences of 16 = 3o games against conference opponents + 16 games against the other conference (single game either home or away). Regular season is 9 months long = 39.5 weeks and playoffs are another month (4.5 weeks). No reason that can't work with a slightly larger roster.

Adding 6 Wednesday games requires significantly more squad depth. I would of course like to see that anyway, but I wonder when the league will be ready to spend the money and expand the number of international slots necessary.

By the time MLS hits 32 teams, that's another 12 teams at $200M+ each = $2.4B (possibly more because the next round is $200M but the figure should continue to increase with each set of expansion). I think they'll be able to afford to spend some money on larger rosters.

Why does adding more league games require further squad depth? It may require clubs to use their squad places more intelligently to get better depth out of them, but they already have between 28 and 30 players in their squads each. I know the go-to comparison is the PL and I hate to buy into cliches, but I'm going to have to here simply because I know the stats better - in the PL, they play more games than MLS, yet the average number of players who get a match (even one) each season is around 25. There have been some teams in the recent past who have used as few as 21 or 22 players. Sure, the MLS squad system enforces some of your players being youths but still, 30 players should be easily, easily, easily enough for an MLS campaign, even if that campaign lengthens by 6 weekday games. If that's not enough for you then it's either because you don't know how to find good squad filler players or you don't know how to manage the team you've already got.

It's not an issue of raw numbers but a lack of quality depth. I think the drop off in quality here is more significant, and starts at the shallower end of the roster, depending on the team of course. For the weaker teams like Chicago, the last 3-4 starters are pretty weak. Better teams can probably go maybe 12-16 on a sloping decrease in quality before the cliff drops off. LA might be have quality deeper than that. The squads that play in midweek games, whether they be MLS, CCL, or US Cup, are just far below the regular starting 11. And it's a function of (1) the salary cap, and (2) not enough US talent to fill out the depth. We think so little of spots 21-28 -- and pay them even less -- that they don't even count against the cap.

PLEASE somebody get a link to a forum where all the "Dark Clouds" (Minnesota Supporters Club) are posting nowadays. I could use the laughs. :D

This was a really good article.

Interesting to note that Wilmington is considering a move to Baltimore.
What's amazing in the article is the Atlanta is who objected to Minnesota being called United. What a bunch of fcking hypocrites!!! DC United didn't object to Atlanta's use of it (nor should they have) and Minnesota has been known as United since before Atlanta was a sports wet dream of Blank's. I don't terribly want to have multiple Uniteds in the league, but Atlanta is coming off as a petty organization to balk like they did.

Not to mention that they should have partnered with and bought the nickname of the local PSL team, which has a great local network and tradition.

Atlanta Silverbacks

The name kicks ass.

Meh. I was a fan of Atlanta Locomotive FC, which grew on me after a while. It's the best borrowed-yet-authentic European name, considering the cities roots as a railway hub and now air travel hub.

lol ah we are going with that ....i was going with the same theme as atlanta....its not "united" because lots of silverback fans and anti mls atlanta fans prefer their NPSL team
I was really just making a dumb joke about if they're not allowed to be United, then they must be ....
