Fifa 18 - FUT & General

Watch much soccer, m8? :)

They actually changed the rule before FIFA 17 came out, but the rule didn't make it into the game.

Did they improve the career mode? That's the only thing I play offline plus h2h online. Never been a fan of FUT. They've sacrificed other aspects of gameplay in favor of their cash cow? The last fifa I've bought is 14 for the 360.

They’ve added some new features to it, won’t see the full thing until the release.
-you can meet with players, managers and agents to negotiate a contract and transfer. Probably going to change the training again too

Yeah, same. FUT is one of those things in gaming where I will never understand the enduring popularity. It's an interesting idea which loses all appeal after 30 minutes for me.

I dont like that someone can spend more money and have the advantage of a better team than me. If rewards/packs were solely skill based id think about playing it. Unfortunately, it makes EA too much money and that will never happen.

I find that every time FIFA comes out, I play FUT nonstop for a while, then lose interest and only play online.

I played FUT once about three versions ago, then never touched it ever again.
I like it in concept in that I always wonder how I would build my own team, develop my own playing style, etc. But then I end up realizing its so damn time-consuming to really get to anywhere I want to and give up on it and just decide to play online.

It is the most difficult game mode, so I am drawn to it.

Also, with rewards and SBCs, it's not nearly as expensive. I have the best team I've ever had and spent the least ever this year.

Weekend league is maddening, but addictive.

Unfortunately, it seems to be the most exploited mode due to it being the most competitive. That's what drives you nuts.

I like it in principle, but I like Football Manager much better for that concept.

I've heard a lot about that, but honestly don't know much about it. May need to check that out.

It's a great game, so long as you don't mind the match-day graphics being very lacking - the reason they are so very basic is because most of the game actually takes part outside of the matches. It's truly fantastic in terms of how much of the footballing world they give you control over - from the basic stuff like match-day tactics and transfers down to appointing the right youth coaches and signing the right feeder clubs, picking how long players should be given off training when they have a cold (or whether to force a player to take injections to keep playing on his injured leg...) etc.

It is also all largely about manipulating data - players have about 40 individual stats, including hidden ones, compared to FIFA's 6, and building the best team is far more about buying players who compliment each other rather than just buying Messi and Ronaldo and expecting to win every game, hence why many people call it Spreadsheet Simulator.

The other great thing about FM is that it has maybe around 100 leagues in the base game, including English football down to the 6th level, French to the 4th, Brazilian to the 3rd etc, in the base game and people spend hours and hours releasing mods to let you play even more (or completely made up ones). For instance, this guy has collected together files which let you play the US league system down to the 8th tier, English football to the 11th (almost 2,500 clubs...) and even has places like San Marino and the US Virgin Islands as playable leagues.

Plus you can now even create your own club from scratch, and an editor mode which lets you play around with all kinds of settings if you want to just mess around totally with the game and give every club a billion dollars or make Ronaldo into the worst player the world ever saw. It basically has depth FIFA will never rival - although the game will cripple even the best gaming PC if you try to load all of the leagues up at once.

If you have hundreds of hours to sink into something and are happy to spend some time learning how the tactics and game mechanics work then FM is definitely for you, but be aware that if you're going to play it as a casual gamer you shouldn't expect to have much success. There's no difficulty setting, and it can be quite challenging to keep a run of results going (or to manage your players' confidence when particularly high/low) if you don't how the game handles such things.

Thanks for this. This sounds quite amazing, but like the exact thing that I do not have time for, haha.

sold! I'll be looking to buy the next iteration. This is right up my alley.

I bought fifa for a few years because my buddy had it and we would play occasionally, but first thing i would do when i buy it was to play the manager career mode. I'd buy the lowest tier club, and try to win the champions league eventually. I would sim all the real games and just focus on development and player acquisitions. Im a nerd and that is what I find fun. Even if fifa has a overly simplified version of it I still played it a few times over ever year. I don't know how I went all these years without looking into FM. Massive oversight.

I saw a bloomberg article on this serbian tech company that made this game top eleven. Caught my eye cause of football and serbian angle so I checked it out cause it looked like something I'd like, but it was a lame pay to win model and i dumped it quick. But it reminded me of this game I used to play back when I was a kid called Hattrick. Its still around, and oddly enough they had their 20 year anniversary and sent my junk email a 'come back to us' message so I started playing that again. I find it to be a fun little distraction. I let it run through the days, I just set the occasional lineup and try to develope youth players. I'm not going to grind like a maniac to sign players on the transfer system cause I'll never beat whatever robots are out there controlling it now, but will treat it like a little lotto game where every week I'll try to pull a quality youth player and develop him, hopefully someday to see that player play in a top club. My goal is to just be passive and stick with it to develop a history in game. I am bummed that I let my old team get deleted due to inactivity, it would have been cool to take it back over and have claim to a 15 year old team.
