Home - Nycfc V Philadelphia - 04/16

Just made the train from the stadium.

That was disappointing. The Union are arguably the worst team in MLS, and they've earned four points against us in less than a week.

The young guys make mistakes, but they're some of the better players on the roster. Poku, Shelton, and Velasquez are guys who really impress me. They'll need to play more minutes going forward.

Anyone know when George John gets healthy?
Mate, are you sure you understand that Villa is spelled V-I-L-L-A. Velasquez is that guy who holds the ball and looks lost near the box. Villa is the guy who holds the Spanish record for goals scored.

I know you're being cheeky, but I actually have seen a few things here and there from Seba that encourage me.

If it's him or Medhi, I'm choosing Seba. I don' think that's unreasonable.

Villa is being asked to do too much. When Shelton's playing that left mid, no one's coming back to get the ball, so we have to be too direct. Seba helps there.

Eventually, Shelton will take Nemec's spot, and we'll see from there.

According to the boxscore over on mlssoccer.com the attendance was 20,461. Crowd looked thin at kickoff, but as the night went on it seemed to fill up nicely.

Can anyone who was at the game chime in on the attendance #'s? And I know this is a stale question, but what was it like trying to get into the building tonight? I'm guessing it wasn't bad at all getting through the metal detectors, since it was a small crowd.
I'm useless at crowd numbers, but it was definitely the lowest so far without doubt. And easy getting in but longish lines for food and beer.

I don't disagree. But it's like asking which testicle you'd like to have snipped off with a bolt cutter. There's no good answer. We need to sit both. Mix, Poku and Jackbsen in mid for now. Shelton, Villa, Mullins. And a bad back line that includes basically anyone but Brosky.

Saw it on tv. I liked the attacking attitude from the team even though defense still sucks.

Another issue is fitness. Even before the goal the team looked gassed out of energy. I hope this doesnt cause goals let in on second half Sunday.

The back line is a lost cause that will not be solved this year. I was beating that drum before the season started, to be honest. They are weak in sustaining possession, lack strength, and make dumb plays.

I also am not a huge Saunders fan, but admittedly, the back line doesn't help him much.

This is why we got screwed with the Lampard thing. We wasted one of our few chances at getting a player who could 100% help us. And he's sitting on the bench anyway.

If we had spent that spot on a DP to help build the spine of the team, we'd have a chance to make noise. Instead, we'll get a year and a half of fat Frank after we're eliminated from playoff contention.

What another disappointing game. A better opponent would have scored more tonight. We're lucky that the Union suck just as much.

Shelton and Poku need to start. Period.

Nemec is a big clumsy fuck. I'm done with this guy.

Can someone on this team learn how to serve a quality cross into the fucking box, please!! Jesus fucking Kreis!!!

They look scared to take a good shot at goal. They're like kids with new toys. They don't know how to act when they get the ball. Holding the ball too long, being indecisive in front of goal. Those last 5 minutes I wanted to pull my hair out.

What a shit-show.

Anyone know why Villa came out at halftime? Nothing was mentioned at the stadium.

Personally, I'm less concerned with how the team looks going forward than with the defense. Attack is the most intricate part of the game and it will improve as they continue to play together and develop an understanding. Villa needs to get fit, goofs like Jacobson, Ballouchy and Grabavoy need to get dropped but there are enough signs there that I'm not too concerned.

But the defense is comical. They need to bring in better quality. If Puyol were actually available and not on DP money I would take him. No leadership, poor decisionmaking and a group of DCs who just aren't good enough.

My grades:
Saunders: 6
Not asked to do much all game, one incredible save. May have been able to do better on goal. Couldn't see his angle.

Williams:5
Not doing much on offense, send a step slow on defense. May not be right since health issue.

Hernandez: 6
His usual steady shift. Obviously missed when he had to come off.

Wingert 5
Not comfortable at CB. Fiery leader on the pitch.

Calle 7
What a revelation to see a FB who can defend and help get forward on attack. Great defending.

Jacobson: 8
Best game from him by far. Looked like the beckerman type we need. Aggressive defending good distribution.

Ballouchy 5
Overall bad game, save for one nice lob to Shelton and the absolutely brilliant goal. How do you miss that sitter?

Grabavoy 5
Involved when he doesn't have to run, but is so slow. Actually played well for a stretch in the first half, then really tailed off. Is knocked off the ball too easily.

Shelton 7
Finally gets the start and shows why he deserved it. Great runs into the box, great assist pass to ballouchy. Faded with the rest of the team at the end.

Villa 6
Not his best game. Maybe trying to do too much by himself? Shame he had to come off at the half.

Nemec 5
Poor with the ball at his feet. But that is not his game. He excels at receiving the long balls and dropping it off to the rest of the team. Looked poised for a goal since we finally started getting some crosses in.

Subs:
Watson siriboe 4
Not a good game for the big guy. Out of position often. Cynical fouling. And missed the header leading to the goal.

Poku 7
Great to see him out there. Held possession and can dribble with anyone. Had a nice shot on goal.

Brovsky 5
Had a nice new haircut. Was that his man left unmarked on the goal? I don't know.

What was the formation in the second half?

Looked like some kind of 4 1 3 1 1

Shelton was dropped in midfield on the left, grabavoy looked to be in a #10 area, and poku looked like he was right on the middle, with nemec alone up top.

It was fairly quick getting in. I'm not too sure on what official attendance numbers were but there was a decent size crowd at the stadium.

If you're able to spin this, I don't understand how you call yourself a supporter. Anyone can see we are the dregs of the league. The sooner we all come to grips with it and complain, the sooner we will see improvement on the roster.

And we have the worst fullback I've ever seen play for money.

I won't ever turn my fandom for this club into a constant demand of Win, Win, Win.

This is not Real Madrid or Arsenal (and I'm a gooner, they have some fickle fans).

We won't build a stable club if our support is only based on performance.

We can't take the Enron approach to support. At least I won't.

We need alot of work. It's our first season and there are alot of factors working against us. .

We play in a baseball stadium.
We have stewards that are ushering people out of the Supporters Section for standing on bench's.
We are missing 1 dp.
We haven't signed the last dp slot.
They have only regular mustard and not spicy at the concession stand
The kicks ass band was far away from the SS
and finally...
I can't get a chimi-changa anywhere!

Obviously I'm joking. Lighten up! Support isn't always about "Please me or go to hell".

It's more along the lines of, and I'm paraphrasing a Greek phrase here, If we are damned to hell, then we walk through the gates together. If heaven is our fate, then we will celebrate like kings.

COYB!!!

See everyone Sunday! For reference, I was the guy in 237 screaming my head off with a tattoo on my forearm and a shaved head.

Possible injury, they took him out as a precaution with another game on Sunday coming up.

They definitely held the ball too long. I wanted to run on the field and fucking take the shot for them.

Shelton brough some speed FINALLY! It helped stretch the field. Watching Nemec in person was worse than on tv. Boy, he is a dundering lummox! Definitely looked exhausted last quarter of game. I think Villa was pulled to save him for Portland.

Any reason why Hernandez got pulled? Didn't hear anything about him getting hurt at the stadium. And apparently when we get into the attacking third we think we are Barcelona. We try walking the ball into the net. Just take fucking shots. You have a rookie goalie in goal. Put some fucking pressure on him and be aggressive. KWS looked like he mistimed his jump on the goal and that kinda stranded Saunders. Disappointing to say the least. 6 points after 6 games isn't acceptable.
