It's Official: David Villa

Wow this is bigger than I thought. First time in years that i have turned between local tv stations and they actually talk about MLS. Villa and NYCFC are top stories on Fox5 and News12

Claudio Reyna is on ESPN FC right now talking about the David Villa deal.

Edit: Basically said that Villa told him he wants to be the best player in MLS. And Reyna is also talking to a number of other high calibre players as well.

People laughed when I suggested that there was a $50m marketing account.. Of course I was only joking but I´m almost starting to believe that I was pretty close :D

I have to admit that it is a little embarrassing that they didn't have a jersey ready for the announcement. A little lame that he just had a t-shirt. I know that there are other factors involved (shirt sponsor, MLS, Adidas), but they've have a year to figure it all out. My guess is this deal was also in the works for sometime. By the chatter on Twitter, there is a done of demand, and they would have sold a bunch today.

Clubs just signed a World Cup winner (and a damn good one too) and you're embarrassed because a jersey hasn't been released yet. There's other factors that come into releasing jerseys how do you know its not due to Adidas for instance? This signing should silence any doubters (except fans of other local clubs who will use any weak argument) that this club means business with a capital B. The best thing of all about this signing is it hasn't come as a surprise. Not that anyone knew it was going to be Villa by any means but anyone should have known it would be someone of his stature or even greater.

First and foremost welcome. Its going to be a fun ride watching this club grow. Is it March yet?

I have never had much interest in MLS but this is looking like a fun project to watch develop. Think there will be a lot of Villa fans like me excited to see what he can do over there. More to come hopefully!

Hello everyone from Spain.

After such a big new like David Villa going to NYCFC, I wanted to join this forum and be able to answer any question about this important player in the spanish football.

Im surprised he already went to USA [you know, some europeans players go to USA in their "last years" but Villa is still 32, just came from the Atletico, winning the Liga and almost winning the Champions League, deserved it, so your football proyect looks really huge!]

Take care of our "7"! And if anyone wants to make him smile just say:

PUXA ASTURIES [It's an Asturias sentence]

Also, his nick in Spain was: Güaje [It means "boy" in the Asturian language]

Like the comments (in English) at the end of his recent interview too.

"Its a honor to be the first player of New York City Football Club."

That's absolutely right. As big as it is that someone such as Villa is now affiliated with NYCFC this is equally huge for him as well. There are no limits to the potential future global prestige of this club and those associated with it. To be the first name in the playing linage is a major compliment to Villa. I also predicted that a major signing would be the first name as well. It was never going to be one of the lesser squad players (perhaps unkind but honest way of putting it) announced first.

Yepp! Villa just got himself another honorable mention in the the grand book of the history of the game!

GO VILLA! :)

In about 20 years, we can berate fans of other teams by claiming that Broadway David playing for us is his greatest accomplishment and that he's most famous around the world because of it.

Well, now I know who's jersey I'm getting when they're unveiled. :)

I just hope we don´t treat him like Cosmos do Pelé.. Dragging his mummified corpse around the pitch fifty years from now etc

Quote.
The timing of his signing presented some complications because the European and M.L.S. soccer calendars do not match. Europe plays a late-summer-to-spring schedule, while New York City F.C. will not gather for preseason training until the third week of January, and it will not begin play until next March.

Claudio Reyna, New York City F.C.’s sporting director, said the team and Villa had worked out a schedule that included rest after the World Cup, fitness training with the team’s staff and a loan to an unnamed team in the fall.

“He’ll be playing some games,” Reyna said, though he said those games would not be with New York City F.C.’s parent club in Manchester.

Looks like Villa is most likely coming down under for 10 games. WooHoo!!

Been watching Villa highlights and the guy is skilled with both feet. I forgot he was right footed till I saw him hit free kicks. Obviously his speed and explosiveness will suffer but with his experience, he'll make up for it with skill and placement. The issues now is getting a dynamic #10 and wingers to feed him the ball in the right spots. Having Fat Frank behind them would be nice.

As I recall it he have always been a rather clinical striker..
