Jack Harrison [Midfielder]

Okay. Villa is staying, that's confirmed. Mix was gone last year. Poku as well.

I have Chanot, Harrison, Matarrita, and McNamara jerseys left. (Also Johansen). One of them will be leaving, it's just fate.

But in seriousness, the club needs to have a starting replacement lined up to sign in his place if we sell this year. Moreover, I want a minimum of $2M GAM allocated to our books for this transfer. The current allocation is $650K. That's not good enough.

Vieira said we will be adding less pieces than we did last year but the pieces we add must take us to another level. Say Harrison and Herrera both leave, well those are big pieces to fill.

Can someone who watches EPL tell me, is he actually good enough at this point? Or are these teams looking to immediately loan him out to a lower division team?

At this time, I would be skeptical of Jack earning regular minutes with any of the three teams linked in that article. BHA is newly promoted, but arguably their best three players are striker, wing and attacking midfielder - not many minutes there.

Unless he is frustrated, one more year makes sense. It will earn the club more money from the sale, it lets Jack play one more year with Villa (a benefit to experience and his numbers), and it gives the club time to confirm if Lewis will be his replacement.

I think the major factor is the money for the player himself. As a young lad, Jack might be content with sitting on the bench at someone like BHA, and coming on as a sub, as he'd get ten times the money he's making with NYCFC. He'd still have the time on his side to progress. The wages in the EPL are from another planet compared to (non-DP) MLS.

There needs to be a change to the transfer rules. If not less time in MLS, then make exemptions for big 5 leagues (since that would mean the player would be frustrated to remain talent wise and it’s not a pure money grab)

I don't think he'd necessarily be directly loaned out. He'd struggle for minutes for sure, but take Everton as an example. Last year (?) they signed Ademola Lookman, an English 19 yo winger / striker. He's still with the first team. I hate to use fifa as a basis for anything in real life, but it does provide some insight. Their fifa 18 ratings are incredibly similar:

At Leicester, Demarai Gray is getting starting minutes this year.

An example at Brighton would be Solly March.

Long story short - it wouldn't be unprecedented. I think he could see minutes at any of the three clubs mentioned. Next year even more so. The England call up definitely had a huge impact, and I don't think we can hide him for much longer.

The question is whether JH is happy with the progress he is making here in NYC and feels his game will continue to improve over the next year. If so, you can make a very good case for him to stay another season. He is our full time starter, and he is getting excellent coaching - neither of those things are guaranteed if he makes a move.

Is he though? He sure isn't learning tactics or game management from this staff
That’s a pretty loaded and unfair critique.

While we as fans would rather see Jack purely play offense, he’s definitely developed his defensive game and learned the nuances of tracking back and providing cover. Did it hinder his ability to go forward, sure, but those were tactics levied from above.

As I mentioned in another post, it’s not as if the team has given him much to work with which is why he takes people on 1v1 so much - the team’s tactics isolate him on the wing for that reason. He either beats his man, or he passes to villa at the top of the box, or he has to pull the ball back - there aren’t any opportunities for lofted crosses.

And even in the last game, when he took the responsibility of shooting rather than laying off to villa, I’m not going to blast him, because we’ve all been saying for months how the team can’t look for villa every time. He had a great look and was inches away from putting it between Steffen’s legs.

For a second year pro, that was tossed into the starting lineup immediately in year 1, he’s done just fine.

Agree. Vieira is well regarded when it comes to working with younger players and developing and refining skills. That's where Jack is right now.

Not that it's ideal and my memory of how it all works is not great but has anyone done one of those half season EPL loans in a while or did MLS stop that. Didn't Donovan and Dempsey both play a full MLS season, go on loan for the back half of the EPL season and then come back to MLS the following year?

We are stuck in this place where Jack is likely ready to give the next level a shot yet 1 more year of development with us helps as well. Add in that we get more GAM if he waits one more year. Could the half year loan approach be a compromise? Go play the back half of this season with an EPL club, come back play one more year with NYCFC and then move the Europe full time at the end of next season.
