Mix Gone?

Mix didn't travel with the team.

If he's moving within MLS, it will be done in the next three hours. If that's the case, look to Philly or Chicago.

If not done within The MLS, when's the deadline?

philly? doesnt this make them stronger? i dont think nycfc will do it.

Our system is built around Pirlo and involves attacking down the outside, not up the middle. Our wings then play the ball back to the middle on the ground, or make combo runs with Villa. Occasionally our fullbacks overlap and then send in a cross if we have numbers in the middle.

Lampard's only fit in that system is to stand in the middle of the field behind Villa and wait for a ball in on the ground. And he's been tremendous at it. But it's a very one dimensional role. Nobody has figured him out yet, but once someone gets smart and just man-marks Lampard with their CDM all game like we've done with Giovinco, Lampard could go from hero to zero fast.

So Lampard has scored a lot, and yes, goals are all that really matters, but he's also contributed to a less possessive midfield. Most games we are outnumbered in the midfield three to four or five. With Pirlo, Iraola, and Lampard all a year older next year, I fear a disaster waiting to happen. It also makes us vulnerable to certain matchups, as we have seen this year in our breakdown games.

Tommy McNamara has been absolutely great at left wing and I don't mean this as criticism, but his high goal and assist totals are at least partly a function of him sitting in a very key role in our offense. His spot is far more important than Lampard's trailing runner spot, provided whoever is there has at least some finishing ability. McNamara also lacks some of the other skills that a winger leverages, such as speed.

I think we could leverage our system even more by bringing in a stud winger next year, like Keisuke Honda or Jesus Navas. It would provide a top player in one of our most important spots on the field. Plus, I think McNamara could score 10 goals in Lampard's spot if he was receiving top notch service from the outside. McNamara would provide more in the high press and track back better than Lampard as well. In other words, we could upgrade left wing while increasing McNamara's production at the same time.

People have been trying to figure out how to defend Lampard for 20 years. I don't think some shitty MLS defender is going to all of a sudden figure it out

Some of you would rather us lose than Lampard succeed
I really don't think thats the case. Sure there may still be some resentment towards him, but I don't think people on here would rather he not play and we perform poorly.

I think as BxLio91 points out, he'll be 39 next year and who knows if he can keep up his current form or if he runs into another serious injury again.

And then the other big piece to it, is the "new shiny toy" syndrome. Its always fun to speculate who we can get and bring over into our team. And out of the three DPs to be replacing, Lampard seems like the one to go (plus we know his contract is running out after this season).

We're past the deadline. Any chatter about why Mix didn't travel?

For what we know publicly right now, the BEST argument against extending Lampard is because you may then have to replace all 3 DPs for the 2018 season. That would be a major step backwards.

Over the last 8 weeks, Frank Lampard has been the MVP of MLS. It's very possible that his body may break down between now and the end of the season, but if he continues this pace, he will get MVP votes.

hes had one good game and had a bunch of balls bounce off of him into the goal. He still plays no part in creating goals, holding possession (79%passing in Colorado game), or defending. The two good, high energy, pressing teams we played have destroyed us with him in there. He is far from MVP status. He's the English Chris wondolowski, except he has defensive responsibilities that wondo doesn't.

I'm happy we are winning, but I see MAJOR problems with our current style of play.

You used to be a terrific poster. Now you let your Frank bias ruin your posts.

I watched the Colorado game last night. He controlled that game on both sides of the ball. There wasn't a player on the field that could sniff his jock strap. His second goal was world class. Brilliant first touch and then curls a ball in the goal past Howard. His other goals aren't luck as you say. You need to be in the right place at the right time. It's not a coincidence that he puts those balls in the back of the net. How many times do we see McNamara just miss a goal because he wasn't in the right position? He slides in towards goal too late. Happened twice against Colorado.

Are there teams that give him trouble? Sure. Same could be said for Giovinco who most on here agree is the single most talented player in the league right now. RJ Allen ate his lunch on two occasions already.

"We are winning, change nothing" is the equivalent of "we are losing, change everything." Sometimes when you're losing, you need to stick to your guns and the goals will come. Sometimes when you're winning, you still need to make changes to stay versatile and continually improve.

There are teams where we don't match up well. Difficult to change that with our roster. That being said, we impose our will on other teams. That's a function of the league and lack of depth on rosters.
