Mix Gone?

He would be fine there. He doesn't have the ability to dictate a game from the 6 position but they may be moving Edu back there anyway once he is fully healthy. That should provide good cover for Bedoya to go box to box.

Quality signing.

Weird move for a guy who has been getting more time the MNT set up. Going from Ligue 1 to MLS is a significant drop. I like bedoya a lot, but this move is not going to help him with Jurgen.

Maybe he just wanted to be closer to home. He has a small child and the money seems to be similar to what he was making overseas. He's 29 years old. He may have one more World Cup in him. May.

Didn't Nantes sign a bunch of CM this summer? I think he might have been losing his position there than needed to get out ASAP. Or maybe Jurgen will read it as him being afraid of competition.

I think significant drop is an overstatement. Ligue 1 has a significant drop in talent after PSG, Lyon, and Monaco. Nantes to Philly is not a significant drop at all. In fact Philly may have the better starting XI now (with Bedoya in it).

Hate to say this, but I wonder if this might also be an outcome of Nice et al. The crap-storm that is France today does not seem on the verge of a quick cure.

For athletes who feel the anxiety of the societies they play in, the relative calm (out of Europe) of the US may be appealing.

While i'm not trying to say that MLS is at the level of Ligue 1, I think "significant drop" is a bit of an overstatement. When you get away from the top few teams, the level of play drops quite significantly. Going from a mid-to-bottom table team in League 1 to a contender in MLS is not such a drop, especially if your getting into a more comfortable situation system-wise (i'm not sure if he is) that could better suit you.

Edit: dannd23 said pretty much the same thing right before me!

If expansion draft is still on the table, does Mix's contract disappear if selected by ATL or LA (obviously don't think we'll place a reserve tag on him) or does ATL / LA have to assume his current contract as well?

Is that our Plan B if not able to move him in transfer window?

I'd have to imagine when you take a guy you take him as is, contract and all. To have to renegotiate 20+ contracts just because you poached them off a team would be a pain in the ass. Just imagine if they can't come to terms with the guy, would they have a re-pick later on in the month and destabilize a team that thought they were done with this process or do they lose the pick? if none of the players agree do they lose all their picks? it wouldn't work.

That's why we have to protect guys playing above their pay, and we can let teams take those who we think are under performing because its a free release. Contract goes with them.

I thought that was the point of the expansion draft? That the team that selects you gets to renegotiate your contract? How that is fair to the player I don't know, but we renegotiated contracts.

I think that was the waiver draft, wasn't it?

I think you are right. My apologies.

I long for the day there are no expansion, waiver, re-entry or entry drafts. If NYCFC wants to grab a kid out of Philly's academy, let us go buy him for allocation money and bring him in.

I hope the front office protects Mix, if for no other reason than so I could watch the forum explode (after I make some popcorn of course). A Lampard contract extension would be just as good probably.

What's wrong with a Lampard extension? Guy has been our best player since Memorial Day.

Our system is built around Pirlo and involves attacking down the outside, not up the middle. Our wings then play the ball back to the middle on the ground, or make combo runs with Villa. Occasionally our fullbacks overlap and then send in a cross if we have numbers in the middle.

Lampard's only fit in that system is to stand in the middle of the field behind Villa and wait for a ball in on the ground. And he's been tremendous at it. But it's a very one dimensional role. Nobody has figured him out yet, but once someone gets smart and just man-marks Lampard with their CDM all game like we've done with Giovinco, Lampard could go from hero to zero fast.

So Lampard has scored a lot, and yes, goals are all that really matters, but he's also contributed to a less possessive midfield. Most games we are outnumbered in the midfield three to four or five. With Pirlo, Iraola, and Lampard all a year older next year, I fear a disaster waiting to happen. It also makes us vulnerable to certain matchups, as we have seen this year in our breakdown games.

Tommy McNamara has been absolutely great at left wing and I don't mean this as criticism, but his high goal and assist totals are at least partly a function of him sitting in a very key role in our offense. His spot is far more important than Lampard's trailing runner spot, provided whoever is there has at least some finishing ability. McNamara also lacks some of the other skills that a winger leverages, such as speed.

I think we could leverage our system even more by bringing in a stud winger next year, like Keisuke Honda or Jesus Navas. It would provide a top player in one of our most important spots on the field. Plus, I think McNamara could score 10 goals in Lampard's spot if he was receiving top notch service from the outside. McNamara would provide more in the high press and track back better than Lampard as well. In other words, we could upgrade left wing while increasing McNamara's production at the same time.
