MLS - April 6 - Minnesota (YS)

Game sucked but hey, I got to try legends for the first time. Thanks Mark 😍😍

Two moments of the game were when Mark shwafta'd it by saying we'd miss the penalty (though tbh we all felt it) and the second was when Mark goes "unless there's some miracle..." Just as our goal goes in. Just great timing lmao

We got reffed, we got outdefended, the crowd was maybe the deadest weekend crowd I’ve ever seen, for some reason the post button on the match discussion has disappeared(mods? Little help?), and my undefeated streak moving seats in the second half finally came to an end. The boys fought to the death but our lack of depth showed out today. The only time I have felt lower about this team was in 21 before the Gudi wonder strike.

This is no way to set up a new stadium. Wtf. The effort is there.
Pascal seems to have the right approach.
Lee out TFN.

P.s. I’ll admit that this is just the cherry on a terrible sports weekend. Between the Rangers, the sad slog on the Manchester Derby and the sad slog of Barca-Betis, it was brutal. The only bright spot wasnValencia pipping Real but that was ruined by a spoiler.

And I’m not even looking at my retirement accounts!

This is where I am. If you just look at the stat sheet, you'd think we blew them out. If you actually watched the match, you're wondering how we didn't lose by more. There's no word for it other than depressing.

On the bright side, Pascal didn't hesitate to take Fernandez and Risa out behind the barn. Our gaffer is unquestionably standing on business, and if we get him some players -- if David Lee's seat isn't hotter than the Sun, it should be -- he's going to win some games. And plenty of silverware.

My wife found this on the ground at the game today. Does anyone know what the Bronx Football Social Club is? Seems pretty cool that they have pins.
Edit: Found it in 234. Now that I’m a STH I feel like I should join a SG other than 3rd Rail

Supporter Group that dates dates back to 2014-2016. Don't think it exists anymore.

When the supporters are sanctioned by not having drums and the opposition scores in the 2nd minute, it's going to be a bad day. That and a set piece goal and Minnesota played the match they wanted. We have 73% possession and outshot them 25-16 but only 4 shots on target compared to Minnesota's 9. Matt Freese MOTM for us. Without him, it's 3-0, 4-0 before halftime.

I don't know what to think of the referee. I don't like him. Passive calls. He did stand on his laurels and confirmed the penalty call but after 4 minutes of review, Martinez hits the crossbar. xG 2.55 - 1.74x. Without the PK, it's even.

Pascal isn't afraid to make moves when things aren't working. But feels like all our CBs are trash this year. Martins last week, Risa this week. We need another piece in the midfield to open up space and create running lanes and opportunities.

Martinez missed his PK. Hannes howled this great chance. Ojeda not putting his curler on target.

Transfer window closes April 23. David Lee is sitting on his ass. If we bring in a player before then that's meaningful I will donate $100,000 to City in the Community. The investment into the roster is absolute garbage. The 2022 fell off because we sold Taty and Ronny left mid-year. 2025 will be remembered because we sold Santi and didn't re-sign someone to fill the gap.

The only teams below us in the East are D.C., New England, Toronto, and Montreal. That's the not the company we want to be in.

I realized my authentic kit from Fanatics didn't have the star on the kit. Returning it and having to pay the higher team store prices will be unfortunate.

The regular PA announcer wasn't in today and Joe Tolleson took over his duties.

I've defended him a lot, or at least pointed out the fact we don't know what's happening behind the scenes. It's not so easy to navigate the contra-scheduling, MLS roster rules, budget constraints and actual player availability (as I've said many times, you don't get something, or someone, just because you want it).

But it's clear he missed on Jovan. And as several people have pointed out, it doesn't matter whether others would have made the same mistake; it's still a mistake.

Now, it's clear we're very, very close to calling Fernandez a miss, too. He smoked a 17-year-old last-minute substitute left back last week and looked good doing it. Which is about the only time he's truly looked like a first-team MLS pro.

The flashes he's shown from time to time aren't enough, and besides, if you're running around like a chicken with its head cut off for 60 minutes and suddenly lock in for 30 seconds, you've still run around like a chicken with its head cut off for 60 minutes.

Or forty. Good on Pascal for pulling him, feelings be damned. Likewise for Birk Risa, who looked completely overmatched today, and perhaps not particularly interested.

So, let's call it two misses in his three most recent signings; Birk being okay up to now but possibly checked out; Martins perhaps being worth the DP, perhaps not (we could argue that one all day), but certainly in the back-of-mind doghouse after his blowup last week; a striker in Bakrar who does everything well but simply can't shoot; and a glaring hole after the Santi departure going unfilled for almost a quarter of the season.

On the plus side, we're stocked with young talent; Matt Freese was a steal; Alonso Martinez was a steal; Wolf is solid; Tanasijevic is beast, if not always under control; we've found some real gems in the Super Draft (especially Malachi); we got the gaffer we've been after forever; we're sitting on a pile of GAM, and we arguably have the most roster flexibility in MLS.

How much runway does Lee have left? This window? Through the summer window? Until the end of the season?

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the office tomorrow morning.

I could be wrong, but the flexibility is purposely made to start competing closer to 2027. Unfortunately, I think that means this season is a massive punt.

Why are we not also considering Ojeda a miss? He can't even convince Jansen he's worth starting. Ojeda cost $2.5M more than Julian. At $7.5M Ojera is the clubs 3rd highest transfer fee player of all time just ahead Magno at $7.3M. He's been here over a year, it's a failure at this point so that's 0-3 for Lee.

It’s either blatant roster malpractice or indeed going through the motions in anticipation of 2027 being the time to show off NYCFC 2.0 in the shiny new stadium. Either way this is supposed to be such an exciting time for supporters and, for me, I am close to my low point in a decade with the continuing roster neglect and increasing the cost of my seats like ten-fold.

I've been thinking about this a lot myself. I've thought all along, the focus is on the stadium. We want to go into our park either as defending champions or as one of the favorites for the Cup in '27.

But to me, that meant being competitive this year. And gawd-a 'mighty do we look far from that right now. I expected us to be top four in the East this campaign and a real danger in the playoffs. We don't even look like an above-the-line squad at the moment.

I believe the book is still open on Ojeda, for a few reasons. And don't forget, Pascal was ready to start him before his late arrival boo-boo.

But if we get much deeper into the season and he's still riding pine, I can be convinced. 😁

Opponents have figured out his extreme one-footedness. If he can’t fix that—and if he hasn’t by now, he may never—then he’s no threat and yes, would have to be considered a failure as well.

Fair enough. But man, he set fire to Hlongwane today. Granted, Trapito was a sub and on fresher legs. But aside from having my favorite name in the league, Hlongwane is no joke.
