I’m sure you’re right that Lee has some theory about the optimal time to sign players. In fact, every time he gives an interview, he seems to unveil some new grand idea about how the team is doing things differently than the rest of the league—always framed like he’s outsmarting everyone else.
Just off the top of my head, I can remember him talking about:
- How using a DP slot on Martins was smart because, supposedly, the market favors signing veteran defenders and young attackers.
- The shift to a development model instead of signing aging stars—completely ignoring that many MLS teams are finding success with mid-career players.
- His various theories about which transfer windows are more efficient for signing players.
Lee seems convinced he's reinventing the wheel, like some kind of soccer Billy Beane. But he’s so caught up in trying to prove he has a clever system that he can’t see that his ideas just aren’t working.
