MLS - April 6 - Minnesota (YS)

It’s either blatant roster malpractice or indeed going through the motions in anticipation of 2027 being the time to show off NYCFC 2.0 in the shiny new stadium. Either way this is supposed to be such an exciting time for supporters and, for me, I am close to my low point in a decade with the continuing roster neglect and increasing the cost of my seats like ten-fold.
100%. The front office doesn't give an ounce of their time for the supporters who have been with the club since the beginning. They only care about attracting new fans to the new stadium. Fans who know nothing about the trials and tribulations of this roster construction since 2022. Fans who aren't posting on any message board or social media.

Every fan I've spoken to about premium seats in the new stadium is despondent.

If the intent is to sell premium seating 4X pricier than the current pricing, the team is certainly taking, shall we say, a unique approach.

Now I'm really depressed.

EDIT: And for the record, even though this belongs in another thread, if anything happens to delay our stadium and I die before it opens, I'm going to haunt the bastards responsible and make their lives an utter hell until they rot to dust. Bet.

Only home team to lose this weekend.

Between last week's surrender and this week's debacle, I'm at a loss for words. I didn't expect us to be good until we got reinforcements. But I thought we'd have enough to stay above the line until they got here.

The good news is, we have the real Keaton back. He's been a factor. Maxi is a damn miracle, although we all know the reality we're facing there. Jonny Shore is a player despite his youth. Haak at center back gives us a midfielder's ability and a defender's physical presence (could he be our new Alexander Callens?). Alonso can play. Wolf is fine on the right side with either Mitja or Tayvon, and Gray is back in the squad. Trapito is fine on the left when he remembers how fast he is and attacks instead of retreats. Perea will be back soon and add a dimension in the midfield. Some of the other super young guys (Maximo Carrizo and Seymour Reid) have been blooded.

We're just so damn thin. We can put a really good Starting XI out there: O'Toole/Cavallo, Haak, Martins, Ilenic/Gray; Shore/Perea, Keaton, Maxi; Ojeda, Martinez, Wolf; Freese.

But it's asking too much of those guys to do it all in every match and try and fend off the fresh, late-match subs from our opponents.

Jansen made the right moves and the team didn't quit, but there was no one to push it over the edge. Martinez missing the penalty was all we needed to see today.

The centerbacks were bodied until Tanasijevic entered. Martins was better in the second half, but he isn't worth a (our only?) DP slot.

Everyone knows we need depth and someone to help Maxi and Parks create ooportunities, but it is evident that spending before the stadium is on hold (though I'll be fine eating those words if something changes).

The atmosphere was dead today. I understand that an early goal will change things, and that the drum ban mutes things, but the supporters section was non-existent. Section 234 made more noise than they did.

I think part of the issue is that most other teams in MLS have really improved and the median level of the league has raised quite clearly since 2021, while we've been tinkering and failing. So we don't have any glaringly sub-par players in our preferred XI, when we can field it, but we don't have anybody who is truly truly elite. Keaton, Freese and Alonso are very good. Martins is close, and has irreplaceable speed. Maxi is 38. Everybody else is filler IMHO.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of truth to this, although filler might be a little strong. Then again, until someone proves otherwise, it's hard to argue, especially since we're sitting in 11th place in the East right now.

And you're right, it's getting physical out there, too. We got thrown around a lot yesterday.

I could be wrong, but the flexibility is purposely made to start competing closer to 2027. Unfortunately, I think that means this season is a massive punt.

It’s entirely possible we’re punting the season at this point, but I don’t buy that it was the plan all along, with the stadium timeline in mind. Coming out of 2023, the intention to spend and build was obvious—but the execution was a disaster. The player choices were so poor that the roster somehow got worse despite the increased investment.

Now, maybe ownership decides to hit pause and coast until the stadium opens—but that’s not strategic, it’s damage control. They didn’t plan for a quiet few years. They tried to make a leap, and they faceplanted.

And honestly, that’s more terrifying. Because if this was their version of rebuilding, what reason do we have to trust they'll suddenly get it right when the stakes are even higher? The failure wasn’t in the timing—it was in the talent evaluation and decision-making. And unless that changes, a shiny new stadium won’t mean much.

Still not convinced by Wolf. David Lee can't hide behind Cushing anymore. He should be on the chopping block.

Wolf would be okay if we had a strong, dynamic scoring player on the other wing. Wolf could play as a playmaker/third-scoring option. Wolf just doesn't have the 1:1 ability to be the 2nd option next to Martinez that he's forced into since all of our other wings are development projects.

just watched jansen's post game presser. i like that he's honest. i feel like if it were cushing, he would have said "but we had X chances. our xG was higher, blah blah blah". Jansen doesn't focus on those things at all and calls out what we were lacking and where we HAVE to improve.

in particular, he focused on our lack of urgency and aggression, speed of play being too slow, and inability to recognize when to and actually protect the ball. I think any of us on here would agree these are the biggest flaws of this team and has been for the last few seasons.

I hope Jansen can address these issues. New signings will help. A quality roster with depth at all positions creations a competitive environment that improves everyone. Right now no one is fearing for their spot and even the guys sitting on the bench, they aren't scared to drop lower cause they know as soon as the starter messes up they'll get their chance. That fear is not there and that translates to sloppy play and lack of aggression. WE NEED MORE!

I'll go further back and say that they've been consistently overestimating roster quality since the start of 2023. They absolutely did not expect to go into the Leagues Cup break with 1.08 PPG and 25 goals in 24 games. They thought Talles would accept his new role and step up, that Santi would work well as a 10, and Pereira, Pellegrini and Ledezma would round out a competent front line that could keep things afloat until the summer window.

Last year they expected that Bakrar's 2023 failure was a small sample fluke, and that one or more of Fernandez, Ojeda and Jovan would be at least regular late game contributors.

This year is the most perplexing. They added nobody on offense, while losing Santi, loaning Jovan, and facing an extended Malachi absence. 2023 was an understandable one-off mistake. 2024 represented overconfidence in unproven acquisitions. The confidence they are showing in this front line in 2025 is just inexplicable. I'm disappointed but not at all surprised how this team is performing.

Meanwhile this guy has to be feeling smug. Pascal is an upgrade, but Cushing took the fall for a multi-year roster fail. Managers can't perform fecking magic David. A lot of people convinced themselves otherwise.

I will say the amount of mental gymnastics a lot of the fanbase seems willing to do to absolve Lee of responsibility is staggering at this point.

1. Cushing is just a bad coach
2. CFG picks all the players
3. Just give it time Jovan, Ojeda, and Ferendez are all part of a development plan that is building to something great!
4. They are just waiting for a new stadium, so he's clearly not allowed to invest
5. How could Lee have known guys like Santi and Sands would leave? How can he be expected to have a plan?
6. He has to wait for Jansen to figure out what he needs

Lee has spent over $37M in transfer fees to get us to where we are right now (Magno, Illenic, Risa, Ferendez, Bakrar, Ojeda, Jovan). When do we get to go with the simplest explanation that Lee is a bad sporting director?

Of all the things to be ... dismayed ... about, this one bothers me the most. If your strategy is to develop and sell (and I think it's a smart strategy, from a business perspective), how can you not have a roster of acquisition targets 10-deep at every position?

I know I'd have one if my feet were under David's desk and I had all day to pore over scouting reports, transfer market data, soccer news, and all the rest of the available information. Not to mention, working the phones. It's kind of a no-brainer.

Which is why I hesitate to criticize too stridently; we don't know whether that's what he's doing, and the targets simply aren't available right now at the numbers we have available to invest for the slots we have open. Maybe the targets don't come free until our summer window. Maybe the math gets better after the season is over.

As I've said many times, I can't imagine he's putting into a cup in his office and thinking up ways to snow us on YouTube.

The issue isn’t that this happens occasionally—it’s that it keeps happening. Exceptionally slow player acquisition has become a defining trait of Lee’s tenure, and it’s actively costing the team regular-season wins. Across the league, other clubs are able to identify and fill roster gaps quickly, no matter when the need arises. Lee, by contrast, not only lags behind in speed but also in results. If the delay led to better outcomes, it might be defensible. But more often than not, it doesn’t—he’s underperforming compared to his peers.

“I’m working on it” stops being an excuse when everyone else is working faster and producing better outcomes.

thing is Lee isn't even saying he's working on it. he's come out time and time again in the last 2 years to say that the roster is highly competitive and basically complete. doesn't sound like someone who recognizes our gaping holes and is actively seeking to fill them.

As much as I hate to say it, I can't argue with either of these. Especially the part about delay leading to better outcomes.

EDIT: I should say, I wouldn't feel we were being fair unless we mentioned the possibility David's hands are tied, at least somewhat. It's a question we've never been able to fully resolve. He may not be free to act as quickly and decisively as he'd like.

For my part, I was certainly wrong in believing we were operating independently and CFG was barely involved. That's not the case.

I’m sure you’re right that Lee has some theory about the optimal time to sign players. In fact, every time he gives an interview, he seems to unveil some new grand idea about how the team is doing things differently than the rest of the league—always framed like he’s outsmarting everyone else.

Just off the top of my head, I can remember him talking about:
  1. How using a DP slot on Martins was smart because, supposedly, the market favors signing veteran defenders and young attackers.
  2. The shift to a development model instead of signing aging stars—completely ignoring that many MLS teams are finding success with mid-career players.
  3. His various theories about which transfer windows are more efficient for signing players.
Lee seems convinced he's reinventing the wheel, like some kind of soccer Billy Beane. But he’s so caught up in trying to prove he has a clever system that he can’t see that his ideas just aren’t working.

Game sucked but hey, I got to try legends for the first time. Thanks Mark 😍😍

Two moments of the game were when Mark shwafta'd it by saying we'd miss the penalty (though tbh we all felt it) and the second was when Mark goes "unless there's some miracle..." Just as our goal goes in. Just great timing lmao
All true.
For his part Shwafta brought binoculars and were managed to pick out LionNYC and JayH sitting across the ways pitchside.
