I am always going to root for Matt Turner.
There was a kid in a Matt Turner jersey, field level on the first base-side with his dad near my seats. He was holding a sign that said something along the lines of "I'm kicking cancer!" (the kid was obviously not well)
After the game, Matt and Sean were chatting it up near that side's goal. Sean tried to trade shirts, but instead Matt went over and gave his gear to that kid.
The kid grabbed the shirt and just buried his face in it with emotion.
That was a tough loss for NER. We really looked on a different level than them. To see MT still do that after the game got my paternal emotions going.
I love this game.
Johnson was very good.
Jasson creates a lot of positive chaos but it was funny for Polster to cynically foul him on a breakaway when the kid had 3 breakaway opportunities and can't really do anything with them.
Curious why Tiago and Shradi were not in the 18.
I believe we gave up zero shots on goal. This team is really, really good. They play some incredibly entertaining stuff no matter the opponent, and give up so few chances. Did New England -- the leading goal-scoring team in MLS -- have even one really good chance? The header that Medina deflected away? Was that it? I know Bou didn't start but we just gave them nothing the entire night. One of the best offensive teams in the league and one of the best defensive teams in the league.
Our two goals were absolutely gorgeous tonight -- How does Taty find himself in so much open space twice? Masterful.
This team is a championship contender, I am absolutely sure of it. I know COVID is keeping some fans away, but it's really time to get get behind this group -- they are good enough to win a title, and it's shocking how few fans were there to watch them live tonight.

MLS xG rates it at 78.3% which is higher than penalty kicks get. I thought it was a bit tougher shot than that. Headers are always somewhat difficult and he had defenders near him. Still, a very solid chance from almost point blank. Buksa also had their next best chance, a clean shot from straight on about 16 yards out that he Ringed over the crossbar. Both those chances came in the first 10 minutes and there was nothing really, really good after that. But the Revs did spray a decent number of shots and their xG was 1.4-1.6 depending on the source. Only one was on target. I said above that Johnson played well. He only had one save, but he controlled a solid number of balls in his area.Buksa’s header off a corner in the first half was a huge chance, I believe Buksa had SJ beaten but just put it wide. That would have put NE up 1-0.
We've consistently been among the best road teams in the league, and will win a few before the year ends. Our Away GD is -1, every loss has been by a single goal. Most of the team's frustrating, incongruous matches where they outplay the opponent yet don't get the results have been away, with multiple goalkeeper flubs early on, and those have come much less frequently lately. I'd rather not have to play a conference championship in New England, but if we get there it's likely to happen and I'm not worried.Until they pick up points in away matches, they aren’t there yet…
While I hated seeing him sit during the entire Gold Cup instead of being here, I was hopeful that a serious taste of being with the national team for an extended time would put some juice into him. He had been stagnating/regressing since 2016 (imo) so hopefully he can revive his development going forward.MLS xG rates it at 78.3% which is higher than penalty kicks get. More on Johnson: before the Gold Cup he ranked 15th and 16th in G-xG and G/xG per game, among regular keepers. Since the Gold Cup he ranks 7th and 4th. If he keeps this up it will have a massive effect on results.
Can't ignore the intra-NYCFC competition either. After a shaky first 2 games Barazza gave up just 1 goal in his last 3 starts and would have had 3 consecutive clean sheets but for a questionable added time PK call. I don't think SJ was worried about his job but the #1 Keeper does not want to be shown up by #2. Since his return Sean has conceded just 3 goals in 5 games with 3 clean sheets. He'd have better results but this coincided with NYC being blanked twice for the first time in forever. While I hated seeing him sit during the entire Gold Cup instead of being here, I was hopeful that a serious taste of being with the national team for an extended time would put some juice into him. He's not really in the national team picture right now (lots of competition in the 4-5 range) but he's close enough that a hot streak and maybe an injury or drop in form from another keeper could get him to Qatar. Hopefully that can keep his focus and we can get him at his best.
