MLS - February 27 - LA Galaxy (Away)

so much for giving the team a pass for a year cause they won MLS cup :)

We didn't play well as a team. Some players had a particularly poor game (gray, malte, talles). But it's just the season opener and we lost at the death. Not like we got humiliated or anything.

I thought Thiago did pretty well when he came on. He's not great defensively, but he gave us some offensive threat going forward, which is more than what Talles did. Talles just seemed a little slow today. But that seemed to be the case for everyone. A symptom of not being home in over a month? Perhaps.

Parks looked great in his limited minutes. His influence was clear and he controlled the midfield and the ball much, much better than acevedo ever could. I don't think acevedo is ready for this level and from what I can see, in his 2 years at the club, he has not improved a whole lot with his weaknesses (imho - playing too slow, not physically strong, and poor decisions). But back to Parks, he'll need time to regain his sharpness as well. His rust is apparent but still miles ahead of Acevedo. If Parks isn't ready for 90 yet, I'd prefer to see Zelalem there.

Heber missed, but give the guy a break. He hasn't played consistent minutes in what.. nearly 2 years? He'll need time to regain his sharpness.

Biggest things for me is how much we missed having Sands. Our wing backs were unable to go forward today and we played more long balls than we probably should have. Our intensity levels seemed down a few notches, which was evident in how we pressed and played forward. After we went down a goal, the way we attacked and move were night and day. If we had played like that the entire game, it would have been 3 points.

last but not least, i don't care what anybody says - those refs were homers today. calls were clearly in LA's favor and cards not being given for... what reason? should have been a clear red to araujo. prove me wrong!
To be fair to Acevedo…he wasn’t great but he wasn’t the guy who coughed up a ball on the 18 that killed us.

Not really pissed at the team. LA is much improved and neutral Reddit agrees with me on two things: we are still pretty good and the Chanot mugging was a clear and obvious red card/penalty.

Maybe it’s not a penalty because of the timing of the foul relative to the other one called, but it’s a fucking red card pure and simple. PRO will remain silent publicly. Wonder if DisCo will do anything but that won’t serve us about this match.

Pro responses are better than politicians not answering questions. Lol

I thought I was pretty cynical putting the over/under in my head at 3 MLS games. That we couldn't go 1 game into the season without someone completely losing it is, /sigh.
Yes, I can talk about the refereeing or player performances but it was nice being at a game again and the weather was beautiful in LA today. One note of context on today as I head to the airport…
Looked at in that context, we had the best result of the CCL teams with a 1-goal away loss. But I'm most surprised that all 4 teams failed to score a goal. And it wasn't bad luck/poor finishing. The highest xG among them was 0.67 per ASA (both MTL and NYC), for a cumulative 2.26 over 4 games. These teams generated no offense.

LionNYC LionNYC I'm glad you had a good away day despite the result.

Personally, the loss hasn't done much for me. I'm still in the "eh, it's okay" bus.

i think you'd probably get a better answer if you gave some context

That play in the 1st half when he was basically on a breakaway and it got called back before he finished. It looked tight but ESPN showed only one replay.

ah yes. we'll never know if he was really offsides. we don't have the lines in MLS like they do in europe. and because the linesmen was flag happy instead of letting the play pan out, VAR couldn't review it. that happened on at least one other occasion in this game. but the flag stayed down when LA was attacking.... *tin foil hat*

Thoughts:
7. Think MLS 2022 is gonna be tougher than 2021

will be the first year for Ronny and some of the newer guys to experience a full travel schedule too.

I'm curious if MLS is still allowing full charters for everything this season or if they've gone back to their limited number of charter bullshit.

i know the flag went up and play was blown dead so quickly - I thought linesmen were instructed to let it play on and then review. I remember on the one replay the comment was “ooh that’s close” but since play was blown dead, can’t review it. This inconsistency is maddening.

that is my understanding too. and i would have been ok if they had done it to LA as well, but they didn't. which makes it even MORE maddening and shows their homer side.

I agree with most of your other points, but this one really struck me as well based on week one. Atlanta and Orlando seem very strong. The Revs and Union about the same. Columbus maybe stronger. Chicago, RB, DC all uncertain. Nobody seems to have regressed much.
In the west, both LA teams better, Seattle as good as anyone, Portland doing its thing; Nashville humming along. Again nobody really regressed.

Exactly. Linesmam was flag happy. Super super close there. And we’ll never know.

what was the xG? I worry we will lead the league again in xG, without the benefit of 34 games of Taty

I’m curious if Instant Replay will look at Arujo’s face grab or the elbow to Chanot’s nose. Curious what they will say if anything
