MLS - June 12 - Atlanta (YS)

Looking back at a few items.

PK. Could easily have been called either way live and I don't think it gets reversed if given as a PK initially. But Romero did get ball and then ATU player goes down easy. I might feel differently if roles were reversed, but I like the call. I'm not a fan of soft PKs. And I'm not a fan of rewarding players diving.

ATU goal called offside. Very hard to see from our horrible TV angles but from my seats at the corner flag it was crystal clear that the ball was easily going in without the touch of the offsides player. Very fortunate bro got greedy.

Ojeda. Made numerous really good runs. On the Bakrar badly taken attempt straight into Guzan when he was 1v1 that came on a feed from Ojeda after he had stolen the ball in the middle of our defensive third and then sliced through 5 ATU players en route to their 18 before perfectly feeding Bakrar. At least 2 other plays where he got to the end line but had no or no easy options to cross to. Props.

Scoring. We all love Alonso. But has it occurred to anyone else that not only does Hannes have as many goals now, but in run of play Hannes has 8 goals, Alonso, 5. Give the PKs to Hannes and you might see a goal disparity of 11 or 12 to 5. He'd probably be #2 in the golden boot race. Then who would we think of as our great scorer? And what would we think of our #9 sitting on 5 goals? None of this is to disparage Alonso. He's been great for us. But much credit to Hannes for the season he is putting together. (And I didn't even mention his assists.)

Politics. Does anyone know if it is league policy to fine players for political messages? Did Hannes get fined for the support Gaza message shown on his shirt after his first goal? It didn't seem to make it into the telecast. So I wonder if there were even any cameras that picked it up or if they simply chose not to show those angles.

Graz, not Gaza. In Austria. There was a mass shooting there this past week. His message confused many people.

The difference between 2024 and 2025 Martinez is stark. 2025 is not terrible, but his xG baseline is down and his G-xG has swung from +6.72 to -4.05. It is so much different that I'm not even confident saying we should expect something in the middle.

Wolf is less extreme but still shows a wide gap between 2024 and 2025 in the opposite direction, going from -0.76 G-xG to +3.30.

Both guys probably will revert to mean. Both are taking more shots in 2025, which is something they can control but maybe their shot pace goes down if we add a new 10 or other front line player.

Agree with this. Tho I still think if you look at npG it is suddenly pretty remarkable how much stronger Wolf looks. Add in assists and npG+A is 11-6.

Granted, timing is cherry picked after Wolf hit a brace last night and has been in a strong run of form. This is why I'm not claiming Wolf is better or more valuable than Alonso. I don't think that. I just think the current stats are remarkable.
