MLS - September 2 - Vancouver (Home)

since becoming head coach, he's been a puppet

As will be the next coach when and if Cush gets the ax.
We had 3 independent thinkers (who still played within the City system) in a row and they all left with time on their contract after ~2 years. We're unlikely to hire anyone content to be an MLS lifer. If he's not fired, Nick would likely stay 4-5 years because it might likely take at least that long for him to build a resume for a European offer.

What we are seeing is the downside of the City Way—“pass the ball, move the ball, pass the ball, move the ball” but it’s too slow and too sideways/backwards. They need more dynamism, more aggression. It probably has to come from the coaching staff.
I think there's something to this. The City way works best with a large favorable talent gap, which is very hard to have in MLS. At a minimum you need to maximize elite difference makers at the 9 and 10, plus have complementary and reliable secondary scorers. NYCFC lacked almost all of that for 70% of the season; at best there was 1 solid complementary scorer in Gaby, who is now gone. But even with those pieces I agree you need something else in MLS. Ronny played with a limited but aggressive press and counter game which Nick abandoned. Especially while Maxi was gone, we probably could have been better served by playing more direct at least some of the time.
