NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

i mean how much annually do you think he should be offered? ....he still 16. we giving him the league minium (what is it 60K? ) or 100K right away?
I think we should have offered what it took to sign him until it impaired our ability to sign surefire gameday squad players.

So here is a very real example of the issue with American soccer. You have a player who is not eligible to sign a professional contract. Yet a team in Europe is offering him a training deal.

What can we do?
He's not ineligible to sign a pro contract, so I don't know how to answer that.
EDIT: All in all i think its the parents having last say and may want him to go to college even if we shell out good money in an offer.
They have two YNT level players for children. Do you really think they don't understand that it's highly unlikely James attends college in a conventional manner?

I'd bet anything they didn't sign because the money wasn't enough or no amount would make them change their mind about him going straight to a European club after his 18th b'day.

That's why we needed to offer what it took. Now, we get nothing. Nada. A thanks for the memories note, I guess.

We have no other Homegrown players a year or two away from signing with the first team. Gio is the next best prospect and say he signs when he's 17 that would be three years from now. So either, we short changed Sands or Patrick/Reyna feel the money spent on Sands to get him on the first team is not worth the price since he wouldn't get the playing time to justify the cost vs another player. If that is not true and Sands is as good as we think, it begs the question, why not just dump all the money on him. Get the transfer fee and then use that to sign the new batch of homegrown talent?

I just hope we don't have another AcademyGate or SandsGate. Sure, Reyna is establishing a great academy system to develop players but they have to develop players for our first team not European ones (that aren't Man City after they play for us).

I wasn't referring to Sands.

we dont....we dont know what their parents know/ dont know. Maybe they see the YNT as a way to get to a top university, that may be the parents idea all along. college may be the top priority.

and in terms of transfer fee...i dont know what you guys are expecting in terms of money .....even if under contract we are not going to be asking for many millions for a 16/17 yr old kid who has yet to play first division and is only about to play in a WCQ for the u-17. a couple maybe but thats it.

Transfer fee doesn't matter. If he is signed away from our Academy (as a paid player), we are recouped some fee. That's the argument here.

A couple pays for another Ring/chanot/callens level player for 3-4 years.

thats the problem for every MLS academy and maybe even every academy around the world who is not a top 10 team, not just us

This is somewhat interesting. Although only tangentially related, I think it speaks to how the landscape for kids is changing. If Mal Pugh is leaving college before even playing a season, it's at least anecdotal evidence of a player/parents not getting their priorities screwed up due to some romanticized notion of when and under what circumstances a kid should go to college.

The academy is currently in first place in the division and 13th overall in the country despite having played as many as 13 less games as some of the other playoff bound teams.

Once again, I'm inviting everyone to come join me at St. John's on Saturday morning for their first home game back after winning the GA tournament, NYCFC's first ever trophy.

Kind of lame we are not in the same division as the Red Bulls, DC and Union though.

True, but qualification for the playoffs appears to be based on points per game, so theoretically you could qualify as the highest qualifier by just stopping after winning your first game...

A 14 year old on our U16 team won the best player award and went undefeated playing against U17s.

He's that good, yes.

People here are talking about James Sands, and rightfully so. The real gem in our youth setup is Gio. He's about to blow up in a way very similar to Emerson Hyndman
