NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

I think you're valuing top-drawer rankings a bit too much. From what I have heard, he had not been in the starting lineup for some time, prior to the move. This in addition to not being called up to the last several US camps (last one I see is April 2016) leads me to believe that perhaps these numbers may be dated. Now, I am not saying whether he should or should not be, but I am saying that perhaps we take the rankings with a grain of salt, as they likely have roughly equivalent insight as us when it comes to making these rankings,

Where are you getting this info from?

Reyna and scally both start on the u-15 team and reyna is captain. Reyna has been starting for nycfc u19 every game this season until he got hurt. The NYC stats are on the Development Academy website and us on us soccer.

If a kid wants to try something different, good for him. If this Barca thing becomes legit (unlike Everton in Connecticut) then how can you blame someone for choosing La Mesia USA over NYCFC

Or maybe this kid lives down the street and his parents were sick of driving to St John's 4 nights a week

considering I am referring to Alexsi Morel and not either of them, I do not really see the point of your post.

I don't think anyone here is blaming the kid for choosing Barca over NYCFC, just noting that when competition likes this come rolling in, we need to step our game up to try and retain as many of these kids as we can.

But how? There isn't a mechanism in MLS to do that? If you're not able to offer him a contract at Age 14 or 15, there's nothing you can do. This isn't Europe.

On that front yes, but increasing the quality and infrastructure of the academy can go a long way on impressing teenagers I'm sure.

dont think barca Long island is offering either....its just parents and kid probably feel it will be better training/ exposure to then get contract offer from barcelona in spain if good enough

Realistically the likelihood of any kids in these academies ending up at Barcelona is sub-miniscule. Some more might make it to Europe than otherwise would have, though even that's TBD at this point. It all still makes sense for Barcelona, because they have the resources to keep throwing out wider nets and if this does occasionally land them somebody they can use, or sell, it's worthwhile.
But on the whole I'm guessing the best will still mostly end up in MLS, except they won't be tied to a team.

That's just it. If you can have a very similar level training experience with equal exposure, without being tied to a local team, why the hell do you ever join the local MLS affiliated training center?

MLS needs to re-think their rules about this ASAP. Or they could lose out on a lot more prospects. I don't really see this as an NYCFC fail, it's an MLS fail.

You're saying this like there's competition around the country for Academy level training. There just isn't. This is a solution in search of a problem. How many Academies are within 300 miles of New York City? 5 now. NYCFC, NJRB, Barca, Philly Union and DCU. There's like 60 million people that live within 300 miles of New York City

I tried coming up with a way MLS can alter its rules to adjust to this development, but none seem likely to address the issue or do more good than harm. Loosening the geographic restrictions might be a good thing on its own, but I don't see how it helps this problem.

They have altered the rules by introducing the Homegrown Player status and upping the $ to $200k.

But there's so much more that needs to be done. I like the idea of loosening restrictions. But if that happens, I bet LESS MLS teams end up having an Academy because there will be competition for the best kids. They're going to want room and board. They're going to want free education. They're going to want a contract.

The current system limits the cost exposure

You added the details to what I was thinking kind of amorphously.

Where is the passive part?
You didn't address me while criticizing my statements.

A near definition case of passive-aggressiveness or at least smarminess. And you offered no substantive analysis, only that it didn't make sense to you.

Pretty sure I've had this discussion with you before. If you want to engage me on the merits, tag me.

And mgarbowski mgarbowski - it is totally passive-aggressive for him to slip in his snide remarks without a tag when he's condemning my position.

So for not passive-aggressive, see above.

That is how you directly engage, FredMertz FredMertz

Eta: I deleted something that was overtly aggressive and uncalled for. Apologies.

Ok, weird thing is I didn’t get an alert that you tagged me. It’s like the forum is now an AI and being passive-aggressive on its own. Weird little glitch.

And I just thought the “what was passive about it” line was funny. If we’re arguing about reps we really need this team to win a damn playoff for once.
