NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

Interesting rule...https://www.mlssoccer.com/league/official-rules/mls-roster-rules-and-regulations

So Vinny is 17...will he count if we sign him?

Homegrown International Rule
Any player who meets the requirements to qualify as a Homegrown Player as a member of an MLS club academy, either in the U.S. or Canada, or has met similar requirements as a member of a Canadian Approved Youth Club+, will count as a domestic player (i.e., he will not occupy an international spot) on both U.S. and Canadian club rosters provided that:

  • The player became a member of an MLS club academy, either in the U.S. or Canada, or a Canadian Approved Youth Club in the year prior to the year in which he turns 16;
  • AND the player signs his first professional contract with MLS or an MLS club's USL affiliate.
+MLS will work in coordination with Canada Soccer to identify qualifying Canadian Approved Youth Clubs that meet specific standards in relation to competition, environment, and coaching. These Canadian Approved Youth Clubs may or may not be affiliated with an MLS club.

With the apparent success of Atlanta’s academy( has yet to be seen but they’re touting Carleton as pulisic 2.0, which I very much disagree and allegedly have George bello as the wing back of the future), how do we feel about the state of our academy, and also what do you think must be done in order to take it to the next level? Also with the first of our groups soon going off to college, what is everyone’s take on that?

Is Vinny not American? The quoted ruled above would only apply to non-Americans.

The rule for U.S. domestics is 1 year in the academy and training time requirements.

He's not. French-Brazilian.
I guess we will have to see what his immigration status actually is. He seems to have been in the U.S. for a couple years. Could have or could get a green card?

Edit: Also makes zero sense to play a kid in MLS preseason that has no shot at being a HGP, this club has surprised me though. If this kid is not eligible, could Man City sign him and loan him back?

This is interesting, and not something I’d heard before. NYCFCfan NYCFCfan, can you add any detail here? Is this still the plan, or, if not, what’s the current plan? Are we still looking at 2019 for a USL side?

Spoke with him back in 2016 and that was the idea going forward. He mentioned it briefly in passing. (Also the first time I met Glenn Crooks)

MLS got more details on it back then.

What do we knows about the ladies academy? NYCFC posted on Instagram showing a lot of girls training.

We have a U14, U15, U16/17, and U18/19 teams and cherrypicked talent from other academies in the region like we did when we started the boy's teams. Without an NWSL team right now, it's likely just a pipeline to college soccer, other NWSL teams, or European clubs like MCWFC.

Given the state of women's soccer in the country, it's mainly just a pipeline for college scholarships.

Good to know man thanks.

Following up, we aren't stacked with talent nationally like the boy's academy. We have won easily against some of the teams regionally but have also lost against some other top academies in the country.

Our top ranked player from the Class of 2018 is Rebecca Jarrett (F), 20th in the country in her class by TopDrawSoccer and committed to Virginia. From Washington Township, NJ.

Our top ranked player from the Class of 2018 is Julia Dohle (GK), 27th in the country in her class ranked by TopDrawSoccer and committed to Penn State. From Scarsdale, NY.

Just wanted to post an amazing goal scored by Haak...
