NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

Pirlo won't be offered a contract extension. Ring's contract ends at the end of the season.

We could be recreating the center of the pitch again this next offseason. I hope Ring stays and I hope he is paired with a another deep lying playmaker. Khedira would be fantastic of course, but I just don't see that happening. I think we now have the roster and the formation to win in this league. I'm concerned that, warts and all, we won't appropriately replace Pirlo. Ring is the Ronald Matarrita of "6's" in MLS

Herrera is the future replacement for Pirlo. Size, speed, and tenacity to break up plays. And he's not eligible for MCFC due to work permit issues, so he's "parked" with us for he foreseeable future.

Ring signed a 1-year deal to test the waters to see if he is ok with his commute back to Finland for national team callups. As long as the first class flights keep him rested and loose, the commute shouldn't be bad, and NYCFC should make every attempt to resign him to a multi year contract. Biggest problem is that he's a total gamer and he's going to be noticed and enticed to head to Europe. Hopefully he sees the value that can be had by staying here - and already a fan favorite. #ReindeerButcher

I'm hopeful Ring stays as well. After the roster churn that's been needed over the last few seasons to recover from our first season it would be nice to get some stability. Having few franchise cornerstones that stick around year after year are always fun from a fan perspective and helpful for continuity.

This is my hope as well

Ring deserves more credit than he receives around here. Definitely hope he sticks around.

Pirlo's replacement is probably another DP. Herrera will get plenty of playing time backing up both Ring and the DP. We just haven't had any midweek games yet. Herrera will probably get 6-8 starts in May/June with our heavy regular season schedule and hopefully two Open Cup games in June. (Either that, or he isn't as good as we think and Vieira will rotate other guys in instead.)

I tend to think Ring is appropriately rated here, actually. He gets a lot of credit for doing his poor man's Jermaine Jones in Prime impersonation.

That's a GREAT comparison.

And, he is properly rated. I think he has relatively poor defensive awareness, much like Jermaine Jones. He can get away with it in MLS because most teams stink tactically. This is actually somewhere where Pirlo has helped. Pirlo is almost always in the right position. He understands his role. Not sure Herrera or another young player could do that well.

That's also why I don't want Ring as the 6 / lone CDM.

Hopes hang on Herrera and maybe Sands? Hey, there's always Mikey.

Correct. He has turned out not to be a 6. He's a marauding midfielder box to box. He needs the freedom to roam and make plays. And we've learned that he is best when coupled with two other midfielders that can cover for him positionally. He's just a disruptive force.

I think Jones is aware. He just hasn't adjusted to the fact that he's not 27 anymore, so he can't cover the same amount of ground. When he was 27, he could play like that because Schalke had a damn good team.

But yes, Ring is not the best positionally. In fact, he is probably more literally Mikey Lopez with a fair semblance of talent. And that's not a bad thing given the circumstances. If you play Pirlo as a lone DM, having someone whose sole defensive instincts are chase ball, knock down opponent is probably a necessity. Ring is actually really fast and strong and athletic.

Okay, I've talked myself back into the him being a poor man's younger JJJ, and all that entails (more or less the same flaws, not quite the same upside when it comes to hitting the big switch, playing ridiculous through balls, getting the occasional shot actually on frame).

One thing I'll add about Ring: even though I'd consider telling him to never set foot in either 18 yard box, his runs are into such dangerous places that the defense can't really just not mark him b/c he can't shoot. So he's at least a massive decoy. If we could have Frank polish his boots for him every week or even just rub up against him, maybe he'd catch a little of that magic and shin one in occasionally.

It's funny you mention his late runs on goal, a la Lampard. There's a reason he's playing in MLS and not the Bundesliga. That's the reason.

If you've ever seen the movie, Major League, there is a character named Pedro Serrano. The guy crushes the ball. Once he sees a curveball, he couldn't hit it with a tennis racket. That's Alex Ring.

If he could ever finish, he would be a playing for Hertha Berlin
