An initial ticket would be bought for the heritage component, but repeat tickets are bought for the player.
Sometimes all you need is that one game to be hooked. Its hard for me to convince some of my friends to come to games with me. But once they actually agree to come, they always want to come back.
I'm not claiming to know how much a Polish international would do for our attendance. But i don't see how it could hurt either.
Are you speaking as a member of a diasporic community, or just shooting from the hip?

I'm just speaking as an Asian dude who would probably be irrationally excited if we signed someone like Lee Nguyen.
Out of everyone that I've taken to a game (almost all of them having never been to a professional soccer game ever), about 90% want to come back for more. Now, none of those have turned into season ticket holders, but they are snagging up single game tickets here and there, and perhaps a few of yours (general posters here) resells.
Well part of my family is from Poland. Polish pride isn't really something brought over by immigrants. On the other hand if we signed a Bolivian player (long story) I'd be ecstatic.

Look at my earlier posts about it - MLS was hellbent on going this route at the beginning and it backfired. Irish players in Boston didn’t work. Colombian players in Tampa & Dallas didn’t work. Italians and Brazilians in NJ didn’t work. Maybe the only place it worked was DC with the Salvadorans, but DC was also the class of the league at the time so there a second variable to parse that is impossible to parse.
Sign skilled players that make a team better. That’s what has been proven to work.
Edit- LA has continuously tried with Mexican players and it’s debatable if that’s had any effect.
Right, but we also subsequently started paying attention to the "prominence / fame" variable. I'm not deeply steeped enough in domestic US soccer history to know all of the players you were referring to in the quoted post, but I'm guessing not all of them were well known. Like

I personally couldn’t care in the least where our players come from provided they are skillful, are seamlessly integrated into/compliment the tactics, and fit into our economic model. It’s hero worship because what happens after the player’s contract is up? Sign another like-for-like player? I’m wary of the fair weather fan that needs to be pandered to on a nationality level. The only pandering that is acceptable (to a degree) is the one that expects winning trumps all else and great players/team tactics/chemistry achieve that.I agree that it should be one factor amongst many. I wasn't asking for a definition of hero worship or why it's detrimental, I'm saying that it's reductive to say that it's the only outcome that would be used to justify signing a player to represent a diasporic community. As
Kangaroo Jack mentioned, and as many others have experienced, and as others have observed in non-football-related endeavors, "getting somebody over the first hump" is often a worthwhile endeavor when optimizing engagement funnels. Anyway, this will be my last post on the issue because I suspect the rest of the forum is bored, and I'm not certain you're actually reading what I'm saying.
Fabian Johnson, Huh??? He’s not known for being a scorer and he doesn’t play a wing forward position - more a wide midfield. And he’s spent his entire life in Germany where he’s still capable of playing - he’s not trading that for MLS. Nobody that wants a DP left wing is even considering Johnson as a possibility.
I think the demographics have more weight on the player then the fan. I know with Gio he said Toronto was an easy transition having a nice Italian population there. Nikolic went to an area with a large Serbian population as well as his coach. A Mexican player would be more at home playing in Los Angeles than in Minnesota imo. So attracting foreign players, the demo may be a considerable factor. Of course this being an international game it's nice to have your nationality represented. As an Italian and Juventus fan I was obviously happy to see Pirlo. Having watched him play in Italy I already knew he was half the player he once was though. I was on board with NYC before him and will be after him. It's a bonus to have an Italian on the team but as a fan it doesn't effect my support. On the flipside I think a diverse team is necessary. I would be turned off if it was too heavy leaning towards one demographic. I like seeing as many nationalities represented as possible.

But that’s just me. I’m a guy who can’t trace his family out of the United States, and that goes back to late 1600s. I have no idea where my family is from, so where anyone else is from just ceases to matter.

That's true, but if you could get James, you take him and build your attack around him. He would put up 20 assists and 15 goals, at least.
