NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

I happen to agree with you. I just don't think it's the best short term option. Let's say you get Giroud in August. He's gassed after playing for a 7th place Arsenal side and getting knocked out of the Europa League Round of 32. Now he goes and trains with France for two months and cleans Greismann's car every weekend.

He shows up in New York in mid-August. There's 12 games left. How helpful is he?

Great long term replacement for Villa though. How many true target strikers are there in MLS? Altidore? Adi? Larin? Who else?

The way to subvert it, although we’d still lose a person like Giroud for the WC runup, is to throw mad money at their club for a January transfer. As a DP, that transfer is valueless with regard to the cap, so make their club an offer they can’t refuse and do it early enough that they feel they have time to replace the player.

Good idea, but does France still call up Giroud for the World Cup if he is playing in MLS?

I don't know much about Didier Dechamps. But using Italy as the obvious example, there aren't 23 better Italians in the world right now than Sebastian Giovinco.

If it’s a bench player that may/may not see much WC time, make an offer to them that they can’t refuse (not talking China League money).

Last year maybe, but I think Khedira is playing himself out of MLS right now with his solid play.

Here's a name that came up on the radio tonight. He is non-DP but he is expensive. He is entering the final year of his contract and he's never been given a full run of games in about 5 years:

Juan Agudelo

I actually like him a lot but I want a dp forward. I'd take him if we didn't have Jack.

It’s all economics and what room we have with the Cap. He made $475k last year which is high for his production (8G/1A), but he wasn’t really on a great team that played to his strengths. Get rid of TMac, and his salary “may” be stomachable, but we’d have to shift formation to make it worthwhile. Considering the impact Chanot, Callens, and Ring have had, for less than Agudelo’s cost, and I wonder if we couldn’t find a better player for less? Probably not a better American(?), but I’m not sure who else is available. However, if all he needs is a change of scenery, he could be a steal, but if not, then it’s an expensive flier.

This is my seven cents on Agudelo.

He's 24 years old. He already has 22 USMNT Caps. Before he went to Stoke/Utrecht, he was a wiz. He's big, powerful, fast and technical. Since joining New England, he's played with Charlie Davies during his resurgent year and behind Kei Kamara. They've consistently tried to play him as a RW.

I don't know if he is any good. I can't remember him ever doing something that made me think he was worthy of the respect he gets.

But the guys on the radio made a good point. He's been called in by 3 different USMNT managers. Stoke wanted him bad. He hasn't been given a chance to play in 5 years.

He makes the max budget charge, but he's only under contract for one more year. Is it worth taking a flyer on him knowing that you are only invested in him for one year? Yes, you need to play a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2 to accommodate him, but I think we all agree that we should be playing some type of 2 Striker formation anyway. Villa can play off him. He can hold up play. He's technical and that helps with Villa making runs.

I don't know if he's any good. But enough people who are better at this than I am think he is. Yet he's never really been given a chance in New England (worst run franchise in MLS).

If you swap Khiry's roster spot and cap charge for Agudelo, he's a net $350k investment on a one year flyer.

Any takers?

Throw in TMac and Khiry and I’d probably take a flier on him. Although I’d want it in writing that PV doesn’t feel the need to shelve him because his defense doesn’t match his offense or whatever the excuse is next year for blacklisting a player.

Giroud is so one dimensional. Like Steve Zungul, ALL HE DOES IS SCORE!

I'm not being argumentative -- I just wanted to type Steve Zungul for the first time in 20 years.
I had vaguely heard of him. What a story. And my God, FUCK FIFA, for banning him from all outdoor sanctioned soccer because he defected from a fucking tyranny.

Giroud would come in as one of the 10 best MLS players of all time. That said, he is in contract for a few more years, unless he's allowed to leave early and replaced. I'd take him in a heartbeat next year if we grabbed a LWB who's a proven service wizard.

Sure we can look at it like that. But also consider who else we could bring in while getting rid of TMac and Khiry.

I won’t pretend to know a whole lot about Agudelo, but as you noted with Ring and Chanot, there’s gotta be other options out there.
