Didn't Drogba's rights get traded after Drogba said he wanted to play in Montreal? Kind of a saving face type transaction so MLS didn't end up with another black eye from the Discovery Process? Everything I had read was that Drogba was not thrilled by the prospect of Chicago, and I think it goes beyond that French is spoken in Montreal (he played in London for years where English is 1st choice).
 
Again, funny that people try to breakdown these rules.

It's simple, teams have rights or are on top of mystery lists for players.

The player says "hell no I'm not playing there".

And the MLS does everything possible to get that player into the team he wants.

Then you bullsht some sort of payment or trade to comfort the team who lost out

Yeah, he basically came out and said he didn't want to play in Chicago. I think its all a sham but NYCFC blatantly disregarded the discovery process to negotiate a contract with Villa and the MLS covered their ass afterwards. I don't think Montreal entered contract negotiations until they had the rights.

He had a decent year, but there has to be something up with his contract for SKC to release him. Didn't they offer him a contract still? So they retain his rights and he isn't eligible for re-entry draft.

This!

When you have to fight for playing time, it pushes you, plain and simple. When you play against higher level talent, it pushes you. I can't understand anyone who isn't ambivalent about US top players playing in MLS.

He's out of contract so I'm guessing SKC has yet to offer a contract. I believe he's making quite a bit though.
 
Just saw the headlines all over the UK that our Lord across the pond is pursuing Messi with a salary offer of 40mm pounds a year. Man City hopes this will also increase the chance of getting Pep.

If true, amazing that they think can work it under the Financial Fair Play rules..... That's a hell of a lot of jersey sales each year to offset a $1M+ per week salary.
 
I care next to nothing about what others think of our team, our city and/or our relationship with MC, but wow will the hate for all of the above explode if we somehow figure out a way to get Demi (34 or not) on loan. So, therefore, I hope it happens! He definitely would be a nice short-term fix for a captain in the back who would get our form quickly in shape, as well as be a great mentor to kids like Mena and Shay if either/both are back.

Demi....Demi Lovato or Demi Moore? I will take either one, I guess. haha
On a more serious note, why can't we have Kompany! When the High Yield market recovers, let's get a bunch of NY fans together and issue some junk bonds to do a reverse takeover/LBO of CFG! Expand PL to include US East Coast (the new supersonic jet, the replacement for Concorde will be ready then). If Elon Musk builds the hyperloop by then, the west coast can join PL too :) everything is Awesome!

Michael Bradley looks bad compared to his form when at Roma. Altidore also looks bad - granted he's consistently injured, Dempsey was less of a primadonna when he wasn't top dog on his team. I think the only player that has had a resurgence since coming home has been Sacha Kljestan but I wonder if that's due more to the system RB plays than anything else because on the USMNT he get abused by every opponent.

Frankly, I'm not sure what the answer is since MLS is great at nurturing young talent, but its not great at keeping the tip of the knife sharp. The only thing I can think of is having a more balanced roster so that even the top players (DPs) aren't guaranteed playing time, but to do that would require a salary cap 10-20 times what it is now. Until that happens, MLS may have to be satisfied with US players leaving to get better/mature, then returning for a short/big contract, and then leaving again to get back up to top form and keep their international careers alive.

Totally disagree. Not sure what matches of MB, CD etc you've been watching and as for JA was he really lighting the world on fire for Sunderland?
 
Playing against better competition does make you better, I agree with that. But what happens when you are just not up to that level and you rot on the bench? .....

I hope the Demi thing happens, this league has multiple mechanisms in which his salary could be paid down to not count as a dp

Demi makes £3.3 million a year. No matter the mechanism, he would have to be a DP unless he was willing to take a $4 million dollar pay cut or if MLS does us a solid with a new mechanism
 
Others have said this, but I don't think we can just gloss over the fact that Demichelis has physically dropped off A LOT. And he was slow to begin with.

On top of that, he's put together a record of seemingly a mistake a game that leads directly to a goal. He should never be in MC's lineup outside of a league cup match (and I'd argue that you go with getting younger players those minutes even then).

All of that said, he could probably help us out, but I'm far from certain that he would be the difference in our defense. Maybe they will give him a nailed on coaching contract to assist here concurrent and subsequent to his playing for us.
