This article also mentions Schweinie's meeting with Chicago and their discovery rights claim. I wonder if he'd really chose Chicago over NYC or LA. Or, maybe he's just doing due dilligence regarding the discovery team before rejecting them for greener pastures. But a 4 hour lunch does sound like he's interested in the MLS.

I will make the drive to Toyota Park a couple times a year (I'm in northern Indiana). Great stadium and while they don't have the greatest fan base by any means, the stadium does a great job of entertaining. Very, very affordable too.

Chicago itself is awesome. Good nightlife, some of the best cuisine in the country, and just a beautiful city overall especially in the summer time. Their pizza isn't pizza but its still phenomenal. Some regret in turning down a job there as I end up going there on weekends a couple times a month. To me it's a lot like New York but calmer.

If you're a great player and you're coming to the MLS, you want to be in a position to win. I hope he sees a player like Kaka and realizes one great player can't carry a team in this league.

No doubt about that! Chicago is the NFL equivalent of the Browns. Terrible mismanagement by that organization. I hope they turn it around because they used to have a good fan base, but so many are fed up with it.

They have a lot of faith in Paunovic and Rodriguez. Theirs is a 3 year plan. Bastian could be a key cog in that.

I imagine it would be hard for Schweini to ignore how bad the Fire has been for the past several years. And he's enough of a pro to know that he can't turn the team around by himself.

So, I'd imagine that if he is talking to the Fire's manager it's either about whether the Fire ownership is willing to completely rebuild the team about Schweini (hard to do given MLS roster rules), OR (more likely) who the Fire can trade him to and what kind of Byzantine mechanisms will be required to land him at a team worthy of his dignity in a locale he likes.

My gut says his most likely destinations would be the Galaxy, us, or NJRB, followed possibly by either Atlanta or Minnesota (though I presume the expansion teams would have to offer some pretty big perks). I could see Schweini being down with living in Chicago, but the Fire are just such a piss-poor organization right now it seems hard to believe he'd be psyched about joining up.

We sold a new franchise to Villa and Lampard. Much harder to do in my eyes. And maybe they're willing to pay his entire wages. It's still America.

Seeing Schwini's injury history just looks like too much risk. If he had more upside, if we thought he could be the best player in the league in 12 months, maybe. But best case scenario he'd be a very solid DP. Worst case he misses more games than he plays. And that worst case looks fairly likely based on his recent (last 3 years) history.
