NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

I'll just note that blaming it on Trump is one of the few ways that the club, league, and player can point to that makes none of them look bad for not making a deal. It's a reason that does not involve the club being too cheap, the league being inferior, or the player too demanding. In that light, note how wishy-washy the article is as compared to the headline:

"The MLS executive said the travel ban wasn’t the only reason the deal didn’t happen, but the player did tell him it was part of the reason."

To me that means it was mostly something else, say money (going way out on a limb), but somebody also said, "yeah, the travel ban could have been a factor" and now they're all pointing at that to excuse themselves.

Doesn't mean the executive order is not a concern at all, but if it was the main reason the anonymous source would not be so vague about it.

ETA: Worth noting that shifting blame is not the only motivation to push this. Even if it was a negligible factor here, there could be a valid and very real concern of it being more of a factor in the future. So you puff it up to add more reasons for people to oppose the ban generally.

I'm not sure why you're all jumping on this. It makes no sense. Khedira is German (not a banned country) of Tunisian descent (not a banned country)

The banned list is: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Maybe it had to do with Khedira not liking Trump or the ban, if it was really him. But it couldn't have been for legal reasons. And like mgarbowski said, if you don't come to America for your political preferences, then you're just shifting the blame.

"The player was not from one of the seven majority-Muslim countries on the travel ban"

So Khedira is an option.

To be fair, the article did say the player was not from an affected country but is Muslim and just felt an increased unease due to general atmospherics (paraphrased). Which of course adds to the vagueness and wishy-washy nature of the story, but it could be Khedira, who is Muslim AFAIK.

Didn't have a chance to read the article. But really? Then it's 100% an excuse. Let's see how many players skip out on the WC in Qatar due to human rights violations and legalized slavery.

The player is Muslim and doesn't feel safe in a country whose government is targeting and vilifying Muslims.

This is turning political, so I'll stop here after one statement. I'll gladly PM after. As part of the statisticaly most targeted ethnic group for bias crime in the US (% wise and incidents) - Jewish, this is all really being blown way out of proportion. The US is one of the safest nations in the world for everyone, before our current president, and hopefully after as well. Especially if you're rich like Khedira. In my mind it's just an excuse for a failed negotiation.

I'll put my money that the club was us and the player was Sami Khedira...

No way in hell. Sami plays for Germany and in Italy, I would guess of Turkish [tunisian per adam ] descent.

ETA: and to put a point on it, you think the trearment of Muslims in America scares him when that's where he plays? What the hell, people? If you really wanted to make it a conspiracy, Badji would be far more likely.

Tunisian if you read my post above. You're better than that Mulligan!
Sorry. Was already correcting before your post. I just pushed Can and Ozil heritage on him - although it isn't exactly unfair to point out how many Turks the Germans have claimed over the years.

In any event, I'm starting my own conspiracy that makes just as much sense: we really wanted Hamid instead of Johnson. (Yes, that's how ludicrous this all seems to me.)

Alot of players won't play in certain countries for a variety of reasons. I personally wouldn't even visit a laundry list of countries if you paid me to. This is a nonstory trying to piggy back the Trump media hype train. It's tacky and capitalizing on fears is disgusting. I'm tired of hearing it from both sides.

Can we get back to theorizing about Mix, how MLS "Giant" NYCFC signed Maxi as their 3rd DP and that we play in a friggin baseball stadium?!

Was Badji supposed to be a DP?
