We should make an informal pre-game and/or halftime meet spot for Forums folks to grab a quick drink or a hello, which sounds like it may actually already be in the BE area. I'm always at games embarrassingly early to grab a beer and watch warm-ups and would love to say hey to the Forums crew.
You and me both brotha!! Usually there as the gates open. Would luv to meet you guys and gals! Met Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan before the Orlando game. We should definitely set something up when the weather warms up enough for NYCFC_Dan NYCFC_Dan to come up!!

Apart from the game, I enjoyed meeting and seeing several forum faces last night. Sat next to Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan as is known, and T Tom in Fairfield CT took my other ticket, as you might have surmised from the photo he posted and other posts since last night. CatNYC came by and introduced herself before the game. Then my old Section 229 buddy N northernburbs stopped by at halftime to say hello, and then after that Cat and TabascoDiva stopped by later during halftime. It was like a forum conference or something. All of which was the best part of an otherwise frustrating evening.

it was nice to see old friend mgarbowski . sorry I missed tom . Shook Midas's hand and although i used scented soap twice my hand still smells of scotch and Corintean leather

I finally watched the match last night.

-I think too many fans are playing the result. We outplayed Orlando. Straight up outplayed them and lost. We won't keep outplaying teams only to come away with no points for long.

-I have never been as proud of this team than I was in the 2H. Yes, it sucked the fat one that they couldn't stick one in the back of the net but god damn that was exciting.

-Saunders is so painful to watch.

-Watching this great game played on the Yankee Stadium pitch is often painful to watch. Is there any insight as to how much longer the players and fans have to deal with the pinball machine?

-Hopefully by now there is no one else that is left wondering if the Pirlo acquisition was a good decision.

-Please let Mendozza start over Shelton. So many great things can happen if Pirlo, Villa and Mendozza start to gel.

And I agree with another poster that mentioned that Villa needs to chill with constantly showing frustration with his teammates. Act like a captain.

Pirlo has been replacement level. What has he done that is so special?

If we're just referring to Friday night, then there was that chipped pass for Villa's overhead kick, and that deep corner that found Mix unmarked at the back post. That's off the top of my head. I can't think of many replacement level players capable of creating those kind of chances out of thin air.

I've been largely disappointed by Pirlo since he got here, but he looks like one of the main cogs of the team now - much rather him on the team than true replacement level players like Velasquez, Jacobson et al

Do you have some advanced stats that say he's been replacement level? I think the burden of proof is on you because by my estimation, 80% of this board will likely say he's above replacement level.

Does such a thing as Wins Above Replacement (WAR) exist in MLS? I've yet to find anything yet in google searches. Please don't tell me he's replacement level because of his # of goals and assists thus far.

How many midfielders in MLS make that chip to Villa or create as many chances for his side as Pirlo has the last 2 matches?

An exchange from Friday night that happened a few rows behind me following the goal:

Fan 1: "Saunders that was soft you have to get to that ball!"
Fan 2: "Hey, give him a break he's been our best player for 1.5 years and that's pretty much his first mistake"

I know it's part of the game growing here in the US but the general lack of basic comprehension of the game by fans is a bit disappointing at times. The only thing worse was the completely unwarranted "we want Poku" chant at the 20' mark when the team was on the field playing their hearts out.

He's had a few incredible passes, a few absolute horror show turnovers, and mostly mediocrity. His free kicks have been worse than Villa's and his corners have been nothing special. If his name wasnt pirlo no one would give a shit about him based in his play in NYC.

Replacement level? So you're telling me that we would be just as well off with Jacobson than would would with Pirlo?

Pirlo is third in player rating according to whoscored.com, behind Mataritta and Mix. He's third behind Hernandez and McNamara in passing percentage. He's second in tackles per game with 12 on the year. Second in key passes per game with six on the year. He leads the entire league in passes per game by a significant margin.

Pirlo hasn't been too flashy, and he'll never single handedly win an MLS game because that is usually done with dominant physical skill. But without Pirlo, our team would be a absolute mess right now. He was the team against Toronto. I thought I read a tweet about him setting the record for most touches in an MLS game but can't find it.

When he misses time for international play, someone is going to have to step up big time to fill his shoes.

Yeah the Poku chanting is pretty gross this year if that's really happening (I can't hear it on TV).

Unless Poku had goalkeeping abilities I don't know about.

Yeah as Albany_NYCFC Albany_NYCFC said it happened on and off nearly the entire game starting as early as the first goal. Heavily from the "Supporters" section (aren't they supposed to be the most serious fans?). Every sub that started walking over to enter the game was greeted with the we want Poku chant and it continued loudly throughout the whole substitution process, so much for applauding the player going off or the one coming on. Super disappointing.

I hate to be THAT guy, but I think people are overstating how well we played Friday night. Orlando's game plan of sitting back and parking the bus made it appear that we were playing better than we really did and the stats people are relying on (possession/shots/corners) aren't really accurate when Orlando intentionally chose to give us possession and as many corners as we wanted. Heath (and I'm sure the entire league) knows we aren't dangerous on corners at this point so they were happy to draw us in and then clear the ball anytime we got into the box -- they had 37 clearances (21 at halftime). Orlando's defensive mindset was to simply limit the dangerous chances they gave up -- granted we did create a few dangerous opportunities and it was a combination of bad luck/lack of finishing on our side and a few good saves by Bendik that gave Orlando the clean sheet, but the fact is that we had 12 corners and 67% possession with 16 shots (most of which were not challenging the keeper) because Orlando allowed it. Gifting Larin a weak goal in the 7th minute just played right into Orlando's hands -- it was a smash-and-grab job by Orlando and, although a risky game plan, it worked to perfection. The small field at Yankee Stadium only helped Orlando and I think we may see more of the same from the weaker teams that will not try to impose their will against us at YS.

I'm usually drinking in the river parking lot before the game. decent crowd kicking balls around usually on weekend games. there is a big group that gathers there not sure if they are TR or a different group

How much smaller is the field at YS?

I too think the people looking at last nights game and the stats and thinking "we dominated and will be fine" are simplifying how Orlando game planned NYC (and how MLS generally works).
Several points:

  • Unlike top leagues, in MLS the team that generally has the most possession does not win the game (due to lower talent level and lots of fast/athletic runners who favor the counter). A LOT of teams in MLS win games like this.
  • Shots is a very deceiving stat, a lot of teams that dominate against a bunker have tons of shots but few on goal (also shows bad finishing as players mishit great chances and fluff it wide or over the bar). Much better is shots on goal which were pretty much even in this game.
  • More concerning in this game is that it was obvious ORL was bunkering from the 50th minute onwards and NYC didn't change its slow game plan, when drawing out ORL and playing quicker on the field would have been better, heck NYC was back passing in the 90th minute to start their attack in their own end of the field.
I think even the Kreis teams were dominating possession early last year, so I wouldn't read too much into that stat. There was a lot of useless possession in the ORL game, and don't expect a lot of goals against 8-9 men behind the ball unless the talent levels are very different and/or elite talent/finishers are on the team attacking - both of those are not general charactericts of MLS.

It's advertised as the FIFA minimum allowed: 110 yards by 70 yards (FIFA allows 70-80 yards by 110-120 yards). However, a lot of visiting teams have commented that it's in fact much smaller than that. I think it was Matt Besler of Sporting Kansas City that said it's more like 66 yards wide and 105 yards long. On top of that, most in the league are bigger than the minimum permitted.
