Most teams that rely on winger play throughout the world have wingers that have speed & dribbling skills. They aren't the best scorers or finishers. They add speed down the lines. Play dumps into the corners. Have good penetration skills. Need to be able to send in a decent cross. We will wind up with four wingers. Shelton, TT, Harrison & Mendoza. There is some really really good potential there. They just need to put in the work. I would have still preferred Villa on left and a strong holding target man up top...but that's not what we got.

Despite the loss, we are definitely better. Last years team had some clowns on it, we have legit talent in all positions. All MLS teams are better this year too. So competition is improved too.

I like Saunders, but I'd love to see how Lurch would be in goal without making any permanent decisions.

Apart from the game, I enjoyed meeting and seeing several forum faces last night. Sat next to Midas Mulligan as is known, and Tom in Fairfield CT took my other ticket, as you might have surmised from the photo he posted and other posts since last night. CatNYC came by and introduced herself before the game. Then my old Section 229 buddy northernburbs stopped by at halftime to say hello, and then after that Cat and TabascoDiva TabascoDiva stopped by later during halftime. It was like a forum conference or something. All of which was the best part of an otherwise frustrating evening.

Yesterday was an example of poor team performance.

Lack of finishing from everyone.

Saunders was caught out, AGAIN.

Vieira's inexperience was evident when he waited until the last 13 minutes to put in Mullins despite everyone seeing we had no height in the box.

Pirlo was pissed at his team after the game. Villa was pissed at his team during the game but he needs to stop. Stop complaining about everything. None of his teammates complain when he tries a totally unnecessary no look pass that leads to a turnover.

Matarrita reminds me of Danny Rose. Fast, strong and had a great shot.

When can we address the fact that Lampard continues to not play?

I'm pissed after watching that game we struggled which is fine, but Vieira had no excuse not to try to adjust the game plan earlier than he did.

Unless we get a target striker soon, we're going to continue to drop points all season unless Vieira stops trying to play everything into the box because teams will park the bus and we don't have the height advantage to score headers.

At the team send off last night (which was kind of depressing because it was so late and we lost) I told Lurch "you really need to play."

He gave me a serious look and said "I really want to play" in a very sincere manner. There isn't more to this story but it was a meaningful moment for me somehow.

Other observations from the send off: Jack Harrison is very likable. Pirlo looked sad/not happy to be there. Poku came out at the very end with Viera. The only two people we didn't bother to get photos with were Villa and Viera. My family likes the way Villa plays, but having met him before, we don't like his vibe in person. My 13 year old daughter especially feels this way- that he is not friendly.

Would have been happy to get a pic with PV but he was the very last guy through and it was getting very late.

I was too emtional to comment last night so here it goes:

Shelton = garbage

Saunders = garbage

Iraola = is he scared of the ball? Wtf

Mendoza has to be a starter with Villa at the top and just two instead of three. Taylor has great moves but other than that he does crap.

I think with a 3 man backline and Mata running up and down the pitch, Iraola had orders to hold his ground and help out Hernandez. I thought he did well with his role (aside from what the f*** happened on the Larin goal???)

Maybe me being hopeful. But Poku is being coached by a world class coach who wants to instill a sense of positioning and contribution on both sides of the ball. We all know Poku is a thrilling, but raw player. Him earnings a spot and learning the game better could be the best thing that happens long term.

I just trust Vieira as a coach far more than Kreis who seemed to alienate players for no reason. I feel confident the right things are happening behind the scenes, and the team is getting better individually and as a whole. That said, I do want to see Poku play.

Just think about this-- last year our fastest player that started was probably Villa or Mix. Now Matarrita, Taylor, and Mendoza are all way faster than them and they add a dynamic that is super dangerous (especially when we play on a big field). God, it just makes you really think about how slow we were last year.

Angelino?

I enjoyed our possession and the amount of opportunities that could've led to goal-scoring opportunities we created, but from the moment they scored Orlando were frequently keeping 6 short of midfield when they had the ball. I think any possession stat needs to be considered in light of how fast and far back the bus was parked.

But also adjusted for our having a keeper with no idea where to put the ball or where it'll be out when he kicks it. Oy vey.

Was also some comment on the attendance but even if it was lower than some there was a fantastic atmosphere. 212 was much noisier and more involved than the opener

I'm not sure it was all in Iraola. It appeared that Mata and Iraola had orders to take turns going forward and to never leave Hernadez by himself. We essentially had two defenders bracketing Larin at all times and Mata was there just as much as Iraola. It worked well.

The officiating was horrible and boarder line dangerous. It was even because he essentially called nothing either way but this certainly ended up benefiting Orlando's chippy play style. The game got really ugly at points with Orlando getting pissy and going for a number of retaliation fouls. The MLS needs to get their refs to call stuff or players are going to get hurt. How is this not a card:

Wish I was there. Next time I'm up in NYc I have to join your orgy.

I grow frustrated with Villas no look first touch flicks when we need to keep possession. They work 1 out of 10 tries. You can even see mix getting that bug too.

People ... stop with the Saunders support. Yes ... he's the most polite and gracious athlete around, but I'd rather have rude keeper that gives us the finger instead of signing autographs, but keeps the ball out of the damn net. He's awesome when you kick the ball to his chest though. Hernandez had a moment or two where he made good decisions, but don't expect these moments of clarity to happen often. Matarrita ... thank the football gods we have him. Iraola wasn't perfect but he broke even with some key plays. Bravo and Mendoza will continue to improve as they learn the tempo of our game, but it's obvious they're used to something faster. Pirlo is playing some D ... fuck yeah. Does Lampard even have a spot anymore if we don't have 4 men in the midfield? Khiry lost his mojo ... hope he finds it. Tony Taylor ... he's got some moves. When he gains that confidence and control ... watch out. Mix was solid again. His pace and endurance has picked up from last year and it's noticeable. Villa could do wonders if we could move the ball up fast enough to not let their entire D and midfield into the box before he gets his first touch.

I like it. The only thing I'd add is Brillant for the aerial threat on offensive set pieces. I'm not completely sold on his defensive ability yet but figure he's at least evens with Hernandez.

We should make an informal pre-game and/or halftime meet spot for Forums folks to grab a quick drink or a hello, which sounds like it may actually already be in the BE area. I'm always at games embarrassingly early to grab a beer and watch warm-ups and would love to say hey to the Forums crew.

Mix needs to work on his finishing skills. If he can bury those one on one shots, men oh men,he would easily be one of the best midfielders the US team has ever seen.
