Official: Pirlo Signs With Nycfc... Soon?

Would anyone be surprised if the team holds off any official announcement of the signing until July 12th?

I can see it happening at half time of the Toronto match:

"NYCFC would like to officially welcome the newest member to our team, Andrea Pirlo! He'll make his debut right here at Yankee Stadium on July 26th! Get your tickets now @www.ticketmaster.com! Code: PIRLOPARTY."

As I said above, I can't see them holding off that long. Especially since it doesn't make sense to hold off in deference to Frank and then announce in the middle of his debut game. That means early the following week.

I wonder if there are some issues being worked out regarding Euro 2016 and his pereived need to spend some time at Juve to get match fit.

I gotta say that, if any of the rumors are true, I'm starting to feel pretty used.

We are not a practice squad. We are not where you spend your time while you prepare for your real competitions.

We are a real team. We have real competitions. He may be Pirlo, but if you come to the team without really caring about winning an MLS Cup, that's a problem.

I'm browsing the MLS store for clues. Fuck this. I'm done for the day.

I agree but ...

Pirlo comes from a league where it is normal to compete for multiple important titles simultaneously. Wanting one doesn't dilute desire for another. If he doesn't show up on the pitch I'll be angry. But him being in Europe next summer was part of the conversation/rumors from day 1.

In Europe these tournaments are big deals for all the top players, not just Pirlo. This is nothing new either. He's consistently talked about how important Euro is to him, so if true, it's not a shock. Big time European players aren't necessarily beating down the MLS door to come here. Euro is a big friggin deal there. How many MLS players will be involved? Very few. Europeans will see Pirlo playing in one of the top tournaments of the world with a storied national team, not only representing Italy but NYCFC too. That could have a very positive impact on our club going forward.

Agreed. Also, totally unfair to ask this guy to pass on this tournament when it is almost certainly the last major of his career. Better to complain that Garber should honor the international schedule.

We can only honor so much of the international calendar. Unlike Europe, big tournaments like Euro, Copa America, Gold Cup, Asian Cup and the World Cup fall within our schedule. Not to mention FIFA mandated international friendlies. It starts to get really cold in November and playing past early December is a bad idea, bordering on impossible.

It is what it is.

I totally agree. I actually think my post was confusing. I wasn't suggesting we should change our schedule. Rather I was trying to set that up as the less ludicrous of two ludicrous options.
