Finding the right combination to win championships is tricky. NYCFC is clearly a good team but I think it’s evident they lack a player or players who bring that intangible quality to a club. Championship squads elevate in the playoffs and this team seems to shrink.

Do playoff wins matter if you don't win a trophy?

Yes. They matter in same way that regular season wins matter (as I said above) even if you don't win the Shield or succeed in the playoffs. It's not proportional, which is to say, making MLS Cup is not half as good as winning MLS Cup, but it's definitely better than losing in the Semis, or Quarterfinals, or whatever.

My Minnesota Vikings have never won a Super Bowl. In the 1970s, when I was a teenager, they made it to the Super Bowl 4 times in 8 years. They have not been back. As much as it hurt to lose 4 Super Bowls, the 1970s were easily the high point of my fandom with that team.
Three years ago they had an epic all-time final-play walk-off touchdown win over New Orleans in the playoffs, followed by an embarrassing non-competitive defeat to the Eagles in the Conference final. Nonetheless, winning that game against the Saints is WAAY better than the alternative even though it led to getting blown out the next week. The complete and unexpected joy that I and other Vikings fans felt after that last play against the Saints was real, and losing the next week failed to build on it, but did not make it meaningless.

If NYCFC had made 1 or 2 runs to the MLS Cup, or even the Conference finals, or some combination of those, there would still be a ton of complaints and whining and fans of other teams would never let us forget it. But that would be better than the record we have.

I'd much rather be NYCFC, which is good and has a chance every year, than Orlando which just had its first playoff appearance in their history. Yes NYCFC has flamed out every year, but at least we're in the dance. At least we're giving ourselves a chance. One of these years it'll all come together.

Orlando disgusts me even more this year than ever before. The dirty plays and surrounding the ref with every, clearly correct call was disgusting.

Does a boneheaded mistake count as shrinking in the playoffs? I think we played pretty well last year vs TFC. We had boneheaded mistakes that were our eventual downfall. Could we have played better? Yes. But our fight was there and we showed it with the equalizer. While it was heartbreaking to lose like we did last year, it was worse to lose like we did this year - with the seemingly lack of passion/drive after we went up a man. That made me more upset than the actual loss. (+the very poor refereeing, but I digress...)

100%. This has nothing to do with a rivalry or anything, but they are a very hard team to root for.

Yeah, bonehead mistakes count. They are the opposite of elevating. NYCFC did not play well for a good portion of the TFC2019 game. I remember NYCFC playing on the back foot for most of the first half. I thought we had the momentum for most of the 2nd half and were gonna win in extra time but yeah, in the end, I call that shrinking. Definitely shrunk against Orlando 2020 and also against Atlanta in 2018.
