Safe-standing And Its Inclusion In The Recent Nycfc Survey

For those of you that are season ticket holders, you've likely received the survey already which included an in-depth questionnaire on new stadium plans. Included were two questions on safe-standing. If you are unfamiliar with safe-standing, here's some info from wiki: ihttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_standing.

As many of you are aware, Hearts of Oak has a history of supporting the Safe-Standing mission. As a show of solidarity with a fellow supporters group from Manchester (1894 Group MCFC) we were loaned their banner and proudly displayed it during an NYCFC match at Yankee Stadium.

Apparently our actions were heard by NYCFC and Safe-Standing is now being considered for the design of a new Soccer Specific Stadium in New York City.

Please be sure to voice your opinion on that survey that YOU WANT SAFE-STANDING in the NYCFC Supporters Section. Feel free to tweet @nycfc and @nycfchelp that a Safe-Standing option is important to all supporters of NYCFC.

For the spectators:

Positives:
- No fixed seating, so you can move around and stand with whoever you want
- The ability to stand during games, which is widely viewed in football as the "correct" way to watch games if you view yourself as a serious supporter, and its absence is cited as a major reason why football atmosphere particularly in England is a lot worse than it used to be
- Nominally it is cheaper, as you supposedly can fit more fans in - whether this is actually how the stadium ends up being designed and prices set is up in the air

Negatives:
- If you want to sit down and still be able to view the game then you're out of luck
- Generally associated with the hardcore fans so not always good for bringing young kids

For the club:

Positives:
- Generally better atmosphere
- Popular with the fans
- Higher crowds, and more money if you price it right

Negatives:
- Potentially less revenue if you price it wrong or don't get the numbers
- Can be more prone to hostile atmosphere
- Very hard to track fans as they are not sat in a fixed location so if someone breaks stadium rules (bringing flares, abusing other fans etc) then it can be hard to work out who to ban

Basically. This is largely a Euro issue that was a response to rampant hooliganism at games but we have little brother syndrome in a bad way.

As far as I know, only Avaya stadium has any sort of safe standing at present and it's a tiny section. The real purpose of safe standing is to prevent crushing, not people falling on you with beer. Allianz Arena for example seats over 75k. If you're in a section with 10k people and they all pile down on the front row in celebration... that's a HUGE problem.

I voted for safe standing but I did so because I think it would discourage less involved supporters from choosing seats there. If there is nowhere to sit, then some people will opt for seats where they have the option to sit. Not at all because it's "safe."

I voted for it as well. The likelihood that it will ever effect me is slim to none; however, I rewatched one of our matches and saw a supporter get tossed down a few rows by some jackass when we scored a goal and fans were jumping around on the bleachers. I watched it about 5 times to make sure that I was seeing what I thought I saw.

My opinion was also tangentially affected by the ESPN 30 for 30 on Hillsborough - although the likelihood of something like that ever happening here is pretty much zero. Which as R roxfontaine mentioned - safe standing is supposed to assist in preventing crushing.

Safe-Standing does have fold-up seats. The purpose for Safe-Standing is to allow people who will stand the entire match the ability to do so without falling forward into the row ahead of them. Currently, the bleachers are filled with fans who will only stand during the game. Those that decide they want to sit are more than welcome to use any of the 19,500 other seats in the stadium.

I think there will be safe standing in the supporters section though not 100% of the entire section. NYCFC needs to make money off other events like concerts and other sporting events where fans aren't standing the entire time.

Some safe standing designs have the seats right in there. Choose whether it is standing room or seating space, depending on the event.
