Stadium Discussion

This is what I have been saying. And forget Chelsea Piers, I mentioned this a few pages earlier: If this monstrosity can be approved, why can't a stadium a little bit South? http://ny.curbed.com/places/pier-57. With our new President, this may finally come to fruition.

Interesting. Didn't even know that got the final greenlight. If that can be approved, it's just a matter of money now. Maybe that's the hold up. We could have bought GAL already...but this is the end game...Pier 40.

I still don't know why Pier 40 can't work. It generates 6/m per year for Hudson River Park...but the thing is deteriorating and the trust doesn't want to pay for it...so it will continue to rot and there will be no revenue. Chelsea Pier had opposition, but now its a gold mine for the city. The revenue possibilities for an open air stadium at Pier 40 is astronomical and far exceeds any investment. The site as it stands is 15 acres...RBA for comparison is on a 12.5 acre footprint. It is a win-win for all in my opinion.

**plus our season tickets will become very very valuable.
I totally agree. The Piers will have to be increased in size a bit - the original proposal had practice fields on the highway side to be used for the community since the stadium would be taking the bulk of the recreation fields inside of the current facility.

It's all about money, it has to be something like a 49-99 year land lease with NYCFC solely responsible for renovation and maintenance of the Pier 40 on top of either a bulk payment upfront, or annual rental payments (or both). It will be a windfall for the city and create a new landmark/tourist attraction. Can't let a few NIMBYs in their $10mm townhouses kill it because their may be heavy foot traffic (which will probably only run down Houston anyway) 25-30 days a year.

The current location is not where the Garden originally was. I think this is the fourth spot it's been in.
That is true and something I mentioned previously. There's nothing sacred about MSG's current location & claim to it except for a soon to be expiring lease.

Also - it's very tough to get down to Pier 40. It would be beautiful though.

I wonder if, long term, the South Bronx can have a renaissance like other communities in NYC have. What makes Williamsburg or Astoria so special?

I get it. Gentrification isn't always a good thing. But the city needs more housing - both affordable and otherwise. Just seems natural that with so many easy subway hubs in the South Bronx, it would be a natural place to go next.

I don't know if it's smart, but from my experience I can't see a stadium being built in only 2 years from start to finish. Every recent stadium in NYC has taken 2.5 years from breaking ground. So figure at least 3 years from announcement. We're already into 2019 if they announce tomorrow. I'm worried the Yankees are going to start to enjoy and expect the extra revenue. Then we can call this thread stadium rant.

That would suck big time... Damn, we are in a tough situation. Because I assume no one will be happy if they go to Jersey or somewhere in the middle of nowhere (Long Island/Westchester) .... So I Guess Yankee stadium would be a better option at that point

Wouldn't a smaller SSS be much quicker to build than any of the recent builds?

I never stated otherwise. I think it can be built in two years. From announcement late 2017/early 2018 to finished sometime in 2020.
But you never know, there's always hiccups and politics that could delay things at any time
