Stadium Discussion

If you're not going to join TR to sing and sit in the supporter section you shouldn't be joining it anyway.
sbrylski RD's is our official bar. They started doing away party's last year for our members. We kicked it off with a forums party the Saturday before our inaugural game. Mick would cook the wings and shepherds pie every away game. Eventually it grew and grew and now they're just known as a place to go every away game.

As far as consolidating forums is concerned that's not necessary. This forum actually has fewer sections than just about any I've been on. Discussions should take place in appropriate sections (and they do here). Off topic/General MLS/Fantasy discussion have and should have their own sections. The two mostly used are News and Rumors and General NYCFC Discussion. Again, one focusing on actual news and rumors and the other on general team discussion. The only ones I'd consolidate are off topic/intro and other sports.

And as far as SS atmosphere the only way to change it is to get a ticket and sit in there and get people around you involved. If you won't do that then you have literally nothing to complain about. For many it's the first time supporting a football team and attending games. It's not going to be Portland this Sunday. Probably not even next year or the year after. It'll take a lot of time to get even near that.

A few observations on the atmosphere debate from one particular angle. Don't underestimate how incredibly bad Yankee Stadium is at projecting noise from one end of the stadium around the building generally. I say this based on two things:

- I normally sit in 226 (obviously) which is right on the midfield line. From there, I'll admit, there isn't lots of coordinated crowd "atmosphere" reverberating throughout and even when there is coordinating chanting/singing, it is a bit faint. However, for the second derby this year, I went out and sat right next to the supporters section. Now, I'm sure given the opponent and the outcome of that match, everyone was particular amped, but the difference in noise was quite notable. It just doesn't make its way around the stadium.

- Having been fortunate enough to travel to many of the grounds in both MLS and the EPL, it is striking how much of a difference it makes when you have (a) a roof and (b) seats on top of the field. Sporting KC has the best atmosphere of anywhere I've been in the US (I haven't been to Portland) because it holds the noise and because the fans are literally feet from the endline. They have a guy pounding away on a giant drum right behind one of the goals (this is the coolest things I've seen at any stadium). I'd be curious to hear about Seattle, but the reality is that all of the "big" stadia suffer for atmosphere. Orlando, for example, draws a great crowd and when you sit at the end by the supporters, it is rocking. But, if you sit at midfield, it is much tamer. Its been the same at other non-SSS that I've been to.

Finally, given that my normal posture during games is sitting there staring intently with my chin resting on my hands and saying virtually nothing to anybody, I'm certainly not doing my part to build the enthusiasm.

How did RD become the Forum bar? Did you know them before this all started up? Did they see the forums and offer it as a meet up location? I'm just curious since you're in Tampa and Falastur is across the ocean so it's interesting that RD bought in to the idea so substantially with none of the site's drivers being local.

I wish RD was closer so I could partake, but it's a hard sell to my wife that the UES is where I'm going for the evening while leaving her with the little one in Bkln.

To the point about presence on the forums, the fact that all Third Rail discussion is quarantined to a Third Rail specific forum is kind of what I'm talking about. It's separate from the general public and the main discussion. It's that link at the bottom of the page to an area that almost has a members only feel.

I'm just working with the parameters that were presented to us. This is not my forum. I am simply a visitor and supporter of it. The TR sub-forum is open and any content within it is posted for members and non-members to view.

I'm getting my news, discussion, and banter in more visible places. What's my incentive to click the Third Rail forum, speaking as a prospective member?

I can't answer that for you as everyone is different. Why I think you should click and what would actually engage you to click could be entirely different things. What I can say is if you're at all interested in what The Third Rail is doing, it would probably be beneficial for you to tune in to what we are doing and see if it interests you further. All we (those working on the Third Rail board and other interested parties) can do is create the space for people to get involved.

But from my perspective behind my computer screen, theres a ton of people and blogs that get way more visibility than anything the Third Rail puts out

What are you using to quantify "way more visibility"? We have 11.8 thousand followers on Twitter, 15.3 thousand on Instagram and 5.9 thousand on facebook. If either of those outlets have tips for us to grow beyond this I would love to take notes. Our average postings to our public facebook page look like this:

To summarize my rambling, it feels like Third Rail content and advertising is directed at existing Third Rail members. If I don't go to the Third Rail forum, I don't hear about it. And that's the issue. In my opinion.

I respect your view point but I don't really understand what else we're expected to do. We put public content out. We put private content out. I don't see anything abnormal about that. We are open and welcoming but we are also a supporters group first and foremost. We absolutely want to grow our numbers, especially engaged members, so we are always reaching out in different ways to let people know what we're doing. We're on all social media platforms, we're in the stands, we're travelling and we're out in the community. What specific initiatives would you like to see us activate?

This thread is grossly off topic right now and I apologize for my part in derailing the thread but I didn't want to ignore the comments.

Rox knows where the stadium is going to be built and thats why the TR forum is private.

You're right. I can admit I'm not really that informed. I was just trying to provide a data point on your visibility outside of the Supporters Section on game day. I'm not a Twitter or Facebook user, so I don't see those. So maybe I'm a very small minority.

Once again to reiterate, I appreciate all you do for the gameday atmosphere and understand just how tough your job is.

I know you are doing a terrific job. I know that you don't control the Supporters Section at our games.

I think the SS at our game is poor. They arrive late and I frankly think they suck in creating an atmosphere.

I think much of that depends on where you sit. I chose seats in 232B specifically because I wanted to be close to the SS, and I can hear them singing the whole game. It's great.

I don't remember exactly when, but before the team ever played a match, Mick came on here offered up his bar in a few posts. We took him up on it and he's been very accomadating to both forum members, brown bag and any fan of the team. He has like 4-8 season tickets (I forget how many) and gives them all out so people get into it. And I think he traveled to every away match last season. If any bar deserves our patronage it's his, he did things the right way. And it's one hell of a pain in the ass for me to get to!

I believe that Dan and Mick were connected via a mutual acquaintance. Dan would have to go into more detail on how that happened as I don't know much more. We were looking for a bar to partner. He was looking to connect with a supporter group and be a part of the nascent culture. It all just worked out.

I'm curious about the back story as well but I agree with all you said. Regardless of how the original arrangement happened there is no question about why it's continued and grown. Mick and the crew at RD truly love this team as much as any of us. They go out of their way to create a great atmosphere to watch a game. I'm spoiled to live near by as I can't imagine watching anywhere else. I also can't think a time when I have been in RD game day or not in which I havn't experienced Mick talking up the team to others in the bar. I know this was posted when it happened but it's worth re-mentioning as a relevant part of this conversation for those who live further away or didn't make the connection, the fan Villa visited in the jersey reveal video at the start of the season was Mick at RD.

RD is terrific and a great place to gather on away days.

It would also be nice to have a designated-ish home pre-game/post-game meeting spot near YS for the Forums. I know that there will be other obligations to meet up with usual crews, but a go-to place to meet up would be great. I am not sure whether there are any bars not yet appropriately utilized that we can claim, but even the consistent use of a particular portion of one of the regulars would be fine. It would avoid our having to plan sporadic meet-ups, and could also include a larger contingent of the not-yet identified Forums friends.

Something to think about for next season. If anyone has any interest, I will remember to thread it prior to next season.

We did a meet up at Yankee Tavern a few matches ago (which I arrived way too late for). It's either that or the Hard Rock if we want our own place. Or a tailgate. Or, who cares and pick a different bar to meet up at each time, mix it up a bit. It's not like we're getting discounts from anywhere for showing up.

This thread is supposed to be about the stadium right? Well yesterday, my father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate told me that his reading of the tea leaves said that they are definitely building on the LIC site, if not the Bronx and the shovels will be in the ground before the second avenue subway is complete. Hoo yeah!

I believe I just missed you at YT that night! All works for me. Good idea that maybe we just have a "Game Day Meet-up" thread on here and just pick a place before every game. I will get on it next season.
