What is this? A STADIUM FOR ANTS?!

From Rob Abramowitz

For anyone north of the city this would be a real pain to get to.

It'd be a pain for almost everyone to get to, really. The closest trains are at least a 15 minute walk from there - and I can only imagine what the moneyed folks of Brooklyn Heights would say about the idea of thousands of soccer hooligans trampling through their streets...

I proposed this site long long ago (too lazy to search) in the Stadium thread. I think I even discussed raising it up and spanning the water between two piers if dock facilities still wanted to function.

There is new public transportation headed to Red Hook I believe from my viewership of Mike Colameco's Real Food.

That being said, unless you live in Brooklyn or certain parts of Queens, this is worse than playing in Harrison

I went to a party in Red Hook back in 2012. Made it back in time for the inaguaral game at Yankee Stadium.

Have to take your word that it's improved. Haven't had enough vacation time to go back again.

Think you're talking about this: http://www.amny.com/transit/1-train...-pitched-by-engineering-firm-aecom-1.12311506

I live in Brooklyn heights so I'd be down for this. But until they expand public transportation, I think it'd be a bad idea.

It's not in the heart of Red Hook, it's a 10min walk from Borough Hall where the 2,3,4,5,R trains stop. 2 more minutes from Jay Street where the A,C,F stops. Along the way there are restaurants and bars on Atlantic Avenue and Columbia Street. It's also off the BQE. It'd suck for Metro North folk, and LI goers would have to go to Atlantic Yards followed by a short subway to Borough Hall.

Damn that's some Olympic power walking son. I reckon it's more like a 25 minute walk from Borough Hall. And maybe a 15 minute walk from the F,G at Carroll Street. I'd still be down but probably I'm in the minority.

The container area is at the end of Atlantic Avenue with the entrance next to Pier 6. It stretches to the Cruise Terminal (off of Van Brunt), so if the Port Authority is only selling that distant portion of it, then it would be a far walk, but if it includes the area by Pier 6, it's not bad.

Congress Could Make It Harder for Local Pols to Blow Your Money on Stadiums
Bipartisan proposal would prohibit the use of tax exempt municipal bonds for stadium projects. That won't end stadium giveaways, but might reduce them.

Reason Magazine online. Article notes that Obama made a similar proposal in 2015 that did not advance. This probably won't pass either, but that it is a bipartisan proposal now is a progression. Still, the NYCFC deal is possibly far enough away that this could have an impact if it keeps making progress. I am completely in favor, regardless of the effect on NYCFC.

The only thing a city should "give away" is the necessary infrastructure (sewer/water) to service an area for a particular maxed-out zoning (e.g. If a stadium or a mall or whatever can be built there, then the services at the lotline should be able to accommodate the code stipulated allowable occupancy for the building type based on maxed-out buildable SF). anything beyond should be the burden of the owner.

States and municipalities use tax exempt bonds for all kinds of private sector things - not just stadiums. Not saying it is right, but also don't know why stadiums get singled out.

All it does is provide a lower interest rate for the bonds subsidized mostly by the Federal government.

Want to make sure you understood me. My understanding is that they are going to build it. It doesn't exist yet

Stadia get more focus because in most cases (MLS aside) both the owners and players are extremely wealthy. It's not common for other businesses to spend half their revenue on 1-2 dozen vastly wealthy employees. Other businesses that get subsidies can appear to generate more jobs for regular people. Which might not even be true but that's the perception.

As for your last point, why the hell should the federal government subsidize bidding wars between different states, regardless of the business? First of all, special deals are inherently corrupt. If your state's taxes are too high to attract sufficient industry, then lower them for everyone, not just the politically connected. If they're not too high, then -- again -- don't give out special deals to the politically connected. it's even less justifiable then. Besides sports, the other industry that gets a ton of subsidies and cheeses me off is the film industry. It's high profile just like sports because politicians love photo ops with athletes and actors. Meanwhile some schlub who wants to open a metal works and doesn't have a major social media presence and an ability to get interviewed on E! pays full freight. It's corrupt bullshit.

Apart from that, if company X is playing 2 states off against each other as to where to build or expand, the federal government should not care who wins or subsidize either or both bids. The idea that something subsidized by the feds is free money for states to take advantage of is costly nonsense.
