I like that the stadium is open but I would have been much happier with masks being 100% required and would have been fine with proof-of-vaccination checks for entry. I felt mostly OK in 224 but I'm (purposely) in the back row and there's only two other people in my row with the back half of my section being pretty empty. And all three of us wore our masks throughout. But then there was the supporters sections. Packed, singing, no masks. Didn't look like a good idea to me, and what is the team going to say if these matches turn into super spreader events? Or when next-of-kin start filing lawsuits?

That was Sunday. Yesterday I went to Citi Field for a doubleheader. Was in 136 (left center, fair territory, great seats for soccer) and it was packed. I was the only person wearing a mask in literally the entire section except for the usher. Was there for the first game but moved up to 332 for the second game and sat comfortably in my own row (and frankly I was a lot closer in despite being a bit higher up).

If you haven't already, please, get vaccinated. And don't stop wearing masks.

Maybe I'm just the "grumpy old guy" nowadays but I don't want any of you to die horribly of Covid, ya know?
I agree. Was the only one in a mask in 103. Couldn’t believe that parents were not making their kids wear masks. I didn’t feel comfortable going to the game. But it’s too late to opt out of my seats.

I agree with this. I'm vaccinated but would feel so much more comfortable going to sporting events and concerts if vaccination was mandatory. I am definitely not going to as many games as I would otherwise go to, and when I do go I am definitely trying to buy tickets in areas that don't appear to be as full.

As for masking, all the science says that it's pretty safe to be outdoors, that this thing doesn't spread nearly as easily outdoors. But I would probably want to mask up in the concourses and bathrooms, even if I feel OK taking it off at my seat.

I think requiring masks for all would have been a good compromise. But even DeBozo is against any type of mask mandates so it wasn't going to happen.

I was the only one in my section with a mask on the entire time and while my section wasn't completely full, there were definitely people within 6 feet of me in every direction, all screaming and cheering. Stadium policies say to mask up when in any of the indoor areas (bathrooms, stores, etc) and to mask up if you are unvaccinated, but as far as I could tell, no one was following these policies and no one was even attempting to enforce it (because it would be practically impossible to).

I felt ok with my mask on and will continue to wear it at any of the games I go to.

Can you point to any outdoor sporting event that has turned into a super spreader event?

The purpose of the vaccine is to prevent you from getting sick and spreading it to others. The vaccine keeps you out of the hospital and a morgue.

I have no problem if folks want to continue wearing masks. My son wore one in the restroom but not at our seats. He’s not yet eligible for a vaccine but he will get it when it becomes available.

I worry that some folks are waiting to move on with their lives until the virus is eradicated. It could be 20 years before that happens. I am operating under the assumption that almost EVERYONE will eventually be infected. It’s our job to get vaccinated and protect ourselves from the worst of it. It’s like wearing a seatbelt or a hard hat.

I've been going to all of the local games, so I am used to being out in the open unmasked. The science is still showing that outdoor gatherings are not where COVID is being transmitted. It's indoor gatherings that are the issue. I keep a mask around my neck and put it on when I am headed to the restroom.

What unnerved me more was the STH gathering in Billy's. It was a large room, but I was one of five people out of 100+ that was wearing a mask during that event. IIRC, only one NYCFC representative was masked.

Get vaccinated, people. The science is clear.

It just comes down to whether or not you (in general, not you specifically) want to take the risk, however small and slim that is, of potentially getting infected and spreading it to your unvaccinated kids and family members. For some, it is a small enough risk they are comfortable to resume life as normal while it still isn't small enough for others.

My personal view is that a mask is a small thing to reduce that already small risk even further. I wouldn't want to see anybody I care about get covid, even if they don't go to the hospital, there's always the long haul risk (which I think is more common in people who exhibited milder symptoms while infected) and the long term damage covid can do to your body.

I agree with you that covid is going to be one of those things that will be around for a long, long time, if not forever. But I will feel better about going maskless everywhere when everyone, young and old, can get vaccinated for it.

Anything new or just rehashes of old info?
Only SoupInNYC SoupInNYC can answer as to whether Gasparino is FOS here, but I think it's clear that this is presented as new news. Gasparino reported on this before, and a few weeks ago rehashed old reports with an extremely Levine-friendly slant. I think Levine has this guy issuing his his press releases as "news," so this is either real and from the Yankees, or a strategic leak that is intended to embarrass the city into blinking.

ETA: It could even be both true (in that the parties all think the deal is basically dead despite no announcement) and a leak meant to attempt to revive the deal, by embarrassing either DeB or Adams into doing something.

All good. I think the key is to follow the science and get vaccinated. And there’s no harm in being extra cautious and still masking up if that’s what we need to get on with things.

I will likely be drafting a new piece late tonight, or later this week (hopefully the former).

Quick and dirty of it, I don't think this is a dead deal, I'll wait until I can put that piece together and hopefully have one additional conversation to explain why.

A few Covid notes based on conversations with Dr. Mrs. G.
  • She was comfortable with me and the kids going to the game, but she wanted the littler kids (unvaccinated) to wear a mask where possible.
  • Her concern around masking the kids was not that they'd have a bad case, because kids rarely have a bad case, but that it would disrupt school, camp, family vacation, etc.
  • She said over a year ago that she didn't think Covid was ever going away. She is more certain of that now than ever.
  • That said, it should become much less severe as people "seroconvert" - i.e. catch it or get vaccinated - ultimately becoming quite benign.
  • She is extremely comfortable with no masking outside as transmission there is very rare.
  • She is extremely comfortable with no masking for vaccinated persons.
By the way, if you need a good endocrinologist - this is your woman!

You continue to be the man, and we all continue to be super-appreciative of all of your great work. While we know that we have been focusing efforts on getting the Bronx across the finish line, does anyone have a sense whether we have also been lightly (or actively) devoting any time or resources to contingency locations? What would really stink is if the Bronx becomes dead and we have to start back at square one(ish) elsewhere.

Thanks, I really have enjoyed doing it all as well, though this last piece has been incredibly frustrating. And not necessarily because it appeared to be over the cusp and now it doesn't seem that way (which is definitely frustrating to me as a fan), but moreso because of the types of things that I'm tracking down on it all. I have some other fun details that I'd really like to share but until this gets squared away, it's kind of pointless.

Regarding leg-work in looking elsewhere. I really don't know. I don't know of anything that has been done from that standpoint, but I also really haven't been seeking that information out, so I can't say it hasn't been being done behind the scenes.

And please don't read this as a suggestion that you should forego the rest of your free time and become a sleuth for information elsewhere :)

I don’t think Willets Point would be considered dead. I don’t believe it has been slated for anything else. But I also never had the sense the nearby community wanted it except for that one state senator who was friendly with Villa, and it would need a ton of remediation. At least the Wilpons are gone.

I can’t think of anywhere else that was subject to remotely plausible speculation.

i vaguely recall an old factory area in jamaica that was allegedly considered, i think they even made a Red bull arena comparison on it on one of the threads here. this was in like 2017 or so.

Yes it was a dairy bottler or something like that. I vaguely think that was turned into something else and is no longer available. I could very easily be mistaken about that, but it also never seemed to have any traction. In fact when it was first discussed it was as something that had been looked at a few years earlier and rejected as unsuitable.
