Stadium Discussion

I really don't think this is too sobering. They polled 200 people, so 22 people less supported this than in 2019. I really don't think considering the sample size, that that moves the needle much.

Now I'm sure public support is fading to a degree. But I don't think it's faded that much and overall this would be welcomed.

Of course, it's awful that this continues to drag on and on and the further it does, more of that public support would continue to erode. It is good to see Vanessa Gibson who is all but certain to be the next Bronx Borough President come a bit strong here.

And I noted this on Twitter, and I'll reiterate it here. The article speculates in several spots whether or not the stadium would be paying property taxes.

The deal would result in the stadium itself being owned by the city, so while there wouldn't technically be any property taxes paid, under the original agreement, an equal amount in PILOTs were to be made to what the property taxes would have been.
I always feel better when SoupInNYC replies in this thread

Do we really believe that this is about parking spaces? It certainly seems like a convenient cover. Yankees have 100% of the power here and they're using it. CFG doesn't want it enough. So here we sit.

What would it be a convenient cover for?

Sure, the neighborhood supporting this is nice. But f them.

You want to blink at a billion dollar investment in one of the most dilapidated places in NYC, go suck and egg.

This is just a weird article. Who is the intended audience? I can see if there was a ballot measure for the stadium or if there were two politicians with opposing positions on the stadium and this was a piece to sway the vote in one direction. This article is not going to put pressure on the Yankees. Even the “hey we can move to queens” is not going to put pressure on BX to approve a deal. It’s not an article that really is advocating any real politics.

The only other reason why this article was released now was they were hoping to release the article while the Yankees made the World Series and hoping to have a bigger audience/impact showing the Yankees as shitty neighbors.

Money. They have something of value that someone else wants. Come get it. Doesn't matter if the Yankees need parking spaces or not, all that matters is how much someone else wants them.

Yankees revenue is something like $700 million a year. They put into NYCFC, what, $25 million? And don't they make like $1 million back per game in rent? Plus appreciation of the MLS franchise rights, they are *well* in the black on this investment. They're in the money and power game, and they're doing everything right on those fronts here.

If CFG wants a stadium bad enough (they don't), they need to write a blank check to buy off both the Yankees and City Hall (they probably won't). Yankees involvement in any of this process is absolutely a hinderance, on balance.

I didn't read the article. Does it speculate how much a NYC gaming license would cost? I can't imagine them being any less than $1b in the hole before the first shovel hits the ground.
Also, how quickly would the Meadowlands casino popup if queens got one?

This will go as well as the Mets’ search for a president of baseball operations which is going into its 11 month now.
My sports team dysfunction hierarchy: Jets>Knicks>Nets>Mets>Rangers>NYCFC

not counting RBNJ and Devils and Isles for obvious reasons. Yanks and football Giants have at least won championships in the last 30 years

Haven't given a listen yet, but it sounds like the stadium might be dead.
He says 'I know it's been written as it's dead. You know we're not gonna completely write something off, but there's nothing active right now."
Then he says they're focused on a site in Queens. What site in queens could they be talking about?

While he says they're "very enthusiastic" about this site in Queens, I'll take it with a grain of salt. A nice, big, fat, grain of salt.

Though he did say that now instead of all eggs in one basket (Bronx), they have it split into two baskets, and hopefully they have a chance of getting one of the two of them done. So the site is still active then???? Contradictory statements, seems to me. Or maybe "nothing active" doesn't mean "we are doing nothing" ??

Maybe we're back to Willets Point? I guess we need SoupInNYC to start attending Queens Community Board 7 meetings.

It's probably BS from Sims. If you have your hands in multiple baskets, do you really have anything at all? This is a giant case of the Yankees screwing us and NYCFC caught flat-footed with no back up plan.
