USMNT Talk

For filler games, I wouldn't understand calling up a 27 year old who, as you say, shouldn't be called up for important matches. I would much rather take fliers on Brandon Vincent, George Bello, Danilo Acosta, or someone else young enough to potentially play in meaningful USA match down the road.

Otherwise, why not Edgar Castillo over Sweat (still wouldn't want either at this point).
Very valid points. Those other players may not be available for whatever reason(s), but more importantly, for throw away matches with hodge-podge lineups, almost zero can be gleaned on the potential of a player because the supporting cast is crap. I want to see (example) Bello with the first team and not the 5th string. For me, that’s a waste and better served by bringing in a guy that isn’t a concern about looking bad because they aren’t the future; ie looking bad for bello or others leaves a lasting impression that is negative over the long run.

Edgar Castillo has never looked good for the MNT, even when his form is good at club level. I don’t think his game translates well, so for me, he’s an eternal pass.

I don't think it would be a waste. Sure, you'd prefer they get time with the top guys, but that's not going to be possible every time. Especially as you want to blood younger players, they're going to have to do so, most likely, without the top lineup all around him.

Getting national team minutes wherever you can find them are going to be good, because the cast around you will be changing over the years, and minutes against teams like Colombia, Peru, or other national teams is going to be a chance to go against quality opponents.

I'm not a huge Sweat fan nor am I Sweat hater, but I do support him because he's on our team. He was mostly decent in the first half and pretty good in the second half. Also, I'm super happy for him to have had a chance to play on the national team, and even if he never gets another call-up again he'll always have that shirt in his closet or maybe in a frame on his wall. He's not the future for the men's national team, and he's not even the future for us for that matter, but he did pretty well in that game and I'm OK with that.

Dan Flynn has stepped down. He was a key executive for USSF basically throughout the entire modern era. It was also rumored that he had conflicts with a couple of potential manager prospects, so his departure could be because of, or at least impact the search for a manager.

He was the $ guy, so not sure why it would have anything to do with a manager search, unless he thought we're paying too much for one. He's had major health problems the last few years and was set to retire before the WC fiasco and Gulati getting canned. He stayed on to ease the transition and now's his time to exit gracefully. Good luck to him and his family.

Rumors of personal conflicts between he and some candidates, and while he is a money guy, he’s still a senior, influential guy. I think Marsch was one of those coaches with an issue, FWIW.

Why?

Because our federation is run by idiots.

Seriously -- would any country on the planet have put up with the way this federation handled the last year? We crash out of world cup qualifying, then jog in place for 13 months? I don't know what the federation should have done for the last year, but there were certainly better ways to come out of that embarrassment than basically doing nothing and stumbling around aimlessly.

Dude. We made some really nice looking graphics with a page that says "OUR FUTURE~~~" and then stuck some really cheesy "promising" music on top of random people's backstories. That's what I call #progress

I expect the reason we said “no” to L is that we are in the final stages of a deal with whomever they’re going to hire. Pretty clear and reasonable if you ask me.

I’m gonna laugh if Berhalter ghosts to LAG....
