IT'S MATCHDAY!!!

Well gang. Jesus Ferreira misses two sitters. McKennie breaking the lines, Dest looking good on the right. Musah has been invisible, Tyler Adams fine in defense but has been turning over the ball. Weah doing well but not getting much help.

Let's hope El Salvador lose some steam and we knick off a goal late. Hopefully 2.

I checked on the score of the Mex-Jam match and almost began to hate soccer. The CBS broadcast is awful, the stadium is disgusting. Yikes.

Canada is killing it in Qualifiers. The standard line is they have 3-5 of the best players in the region, but not a lot of depth. I agree with the first part but don't know enough to rate the depth. Honestly I'm surprised they didn't beat Mexico in the Gold Cup.They weren't even in the Nations League finals, which is mind boggling given their recent play, but I maybe that's because qualifying for that was in 2019 I think and their current players hadn't yet developed?

Anyway, they scare me. Not just for Sunday. Hell, we might even win Sunday. Davies is out, which helps, though they're still tough enough. But if Canada keeps it up. If their current group is not a fluke but this is how they are going to be, then CONCACAF is going to be a tougher place to play.

And Ian is right. That's a helluva pass.

Mexico is utter crap this qualifying window and are currently only two points in front of Costa Rico, who are even more utter crap than Mexico...

I think beating Canada would be a great exclamation point to qualification for the world cup. We win that game, we're basically qualified.

Isn't Mexico 5 points ahead of Costa Rica?

I'm actually rooting for Mexico at home the next 2 games. Let them bury Panama and Costa Rica and all but lock in the big three.

Not saying they've been inspiring, but Mexico has also played most of their qualifying games on the road so far. 4 of their final 5 games are at home which should see them pick up A LOT more points

*checks standings*

heh whoops my brain was in "Mexico lost to Jamaica" mode but then I remembered they didn't win.

That's true, so let's see how this goes down for the end... With 5 games to go we really only need to win and have mexico beat Costa Rica for us to basically be locked into qualifying.

Locked into top 4. Remember that 4th place goes into the playoff against OFC.

(Perhaps you were assuming that since we drew OFC, that would be "a lock")

Mathematical guaranteed qualification in the next 2 games requires a lot to go exactly right.

We have to win both
Panama has to lose both (H-Jamaica, A-Mexico).
Costa Rica has to do no better than 2 draws (A-Mexico A-Jamaica).

Jamaica and Mexico can help us a lot in the next 2 games. Jamaica will be missing Damion Lowe in Panama due to Red card against Mexico.

It was a rough game, but a lot of that should be credited to El Salvador. They played incredibly hard and were really disruptive. It was like watching us play the Red Bulls. Hugo Perez looks to be a really good coach.

I thought Musah was good in this one. He and McKinnie did amazing jobs bringing the ball forward in traffic. They operated really well in tight spaces and were impossible to force off the ball.

The same cannot be said of Pulisic. Very poor game from him - a big reason why we didn't score more is that he simply couldn't get anything going.

Not sure how I feel about Ferreira. Missing those sitters really hurt, but the rest of his game was very good. Nice pressure. Did a good job dropping back and facilitating. He assisted on the goal, which people forget. That said, I'd rather see one of the others in the next two games. Heck, I even wonder how we would have done with Jozy Altidore up there muscling people around, winning balls in the air and holding up play.

Fullbacks great. Weah too.

Centerbacks tended to get out of position. Adams had to track 40 yards to shut down an attack in the box because the defense was not where it was supposed to be.

That's about how I saw it, although I thought we defended pretty well. Zimmerman especially was really good again.

Puli definitely had a bad game. I really wish he had stayed in the channel out wide a bit more instead of cutting in and trying to dribble through three guys, over and over. He actually short-circuited our attack a bit.

But he'll turn it around. Matt Doyle had a good piece on the MLS site tonight, and he suggested Weah and Pulisic switching sides versus Canada. Might not be a bad idea.

Here's the piece: The USMNT's Pulisic Problem, lessons learned from El Salvador & what to expect at Canada | MLSSoccer.com

He fails the internal logic test when talking about his overall lineup for the Canada match. But other than that, I think he's got a good handle on some fundamental issues.
