USMNT Talk

Steffen had a eh, decent game overall. I'll also grant he seems a bit more more composed and determined than Turner in distribution, though he wasn't flawless there either. But making this change, in Columbus, after conceding just 3 goals in 5 games (the most recent an own goal off a corner) reeks of playing Chris Wingert on his birthday, as Lion noted in the chat last night.
I can't remember whether I had read or the announcers mentioned that GB had pre-determined that he was likely going to get Steffen at least 1 of the 3 games. This is the mentality for a few friendlies, not do-or-die qualifiers. If Turner is playing well, like he generally was, it was irresponsible to replace him. If it turned out there was a strategic reason for the move - for example, Turner was hindering their playing from the back, fine, that's at least a tactical decision, right or wrong. But if this was nothing more than a rotation, that's troubling. I didn't replay the first goal, but in real time I also thought ZS was out of position resulting in the clear with the head, which started the train wreck. He also looked flustered after that.

Separate from that, I love the response from the boys. Warts and all, that was a full throttle victory.

What a win last night! Not only did we beat Mexico for the third time this year, we actually dominated them unlike the summer matches. One of the most well played matches ive ever seen from the US in my lifetime against a quality opponent!

that was a beat down in the second half. I think Mexico is still trying to figure out who is Yunus Musah because he balled out on Friday.

This was a beat down, not a “our keeper bails us out and the USMNT wins on a set piece.” The future is so bright for the USMNT, they have to wear shades.

It was a great win and well deserved. On TV, the pundits were saying Mexico had the better first half. I didn't see it that way. They had a couple good chances off the break - maybe the better chances - but overall, our midfield was controlling things. Given how well we tend to do in the 2nd half, I was confident.

By the way, for all the good and bad said about Berhalter, it reflects well on him that we are a 2nd half team. It suggests that he manages the game well and makes proper adjustments at halftime.

Its also sort of expected. We are so much younger than the other teams so the gap should naturally expand in the second half.

Has anyone found a site that breaks down international games with advanced statistics. I'd love to see XG and other stats from the USA - Mexico game last Friday.

US cashing in ALL their chips with the CONCACAF refs.... could be 3-1 now. Handball in 1st half, ok fine, but that foul negating the 2nd Jamaica goal... idk
Think a handball call there would have been very harsh. Had it not hit his upper arm, it would have hit his chest, his arm wasn't away from his body.

The foul negating the second goal was a little weak. I think it's clear the Jamaica player uses Zimmerman to gain leverage there, but didn't think it was egregious.
