USMNT or not, the Whitecaps just freed up an international roster spot.

Wouldn't it have been freed up before since a green card is needed prior to citizenship? Or did he gain citizenship through some other process ala David Regis?

All you need is a green card? I didn't realize. Then let's get them for our boys already!

Any guesses as to why Manneh left early?

Did they find out his waiver wasn't going through? Or did VWC just throw a big fit?

Yo, so Villafana just got called in. That's cool. But it's a sucky indicator for his season in MX.

Paul Paul, you were on this with me, weren't you?

Gedion got that after becoming a citizen. The waiver involves naturalizing someone who wasn't a resident for some number of years first.
Exactly. Manneh is a citizen now. FIFA could waive the residency requirement for 5 years after 18. He'd have about as good a claim as possible, given that he's actually lived here for well over 5. My understanding is it was requested, anyway. To me, it seems nuts that it's not rubber-stamped.

Yeah, it's about damn time he got a call up. He's #1 on the depth chart at LB in my opinion and has been for a while.

ETA: FabJo is wasted at LB imo so I don't consider him there.

Kind of some odd takes. One in particular is his position about the use of dual nationals being troubling because it exposes the problems with how we develop domestic players. That was essentially Bruce Arena's point that was subsequently twisted out of all recognition and used as a cudgel against him. The author mentions that "Bruce Arena kicked the same beehive a while back" without also saying that when he kicked the beehive, he was making the same point.

I also find his references to Donovan's comments in 2014 interesting (I think the comments were actually made later - in 2015). Not surprisingly, it's Donovan who has spoken most openly and intelligently on the topic. He said some foreign guys are great and fully committed to the U.S. team and full of pride in that, and others are more mercenary - they joined the U.S. because that was the easiest way to play in a world cup.

Commitment and effort go a long way in soccer - maybe more than in any other sport. We are usually very strong in that regard, which is why we've punched above our weight so often. You are always going to have players that fall short in the effort and intensity they put into the project - both dual nationals and domestics. The question is whether it's potentially a bigger issue with dual nationals. Maybe so, maybe not, but I don't think people who are raising the point - particularly if they are from the inside - should be pilloried as xenophobic.
