We will be getting refunds because the event in question is not going to be played within the next 12 months.

MLS 2020 is not happening.

Stop kidding yourself that society is going back to normal before a vaccine is put out and that won’t happen (unless the FDA rescinds testing protocols) for another 12-18 months and then will need 300million doses for the US and another 5billion for the world, which to manufacture and distribute will take longer.

Further, if they don’t refund me, they will have lost me forever. If they’re so greedy that they’re going to keep payment for season tix to games that are never played, then Fck them to hell because that’s the most unethical company to hide behind a pandemic.

Obviously if games are not played or we are not allowed to attend or it's a year .. we'd get refunds. Just as the agreement says.

I think whether we start the season again doesn't depend on the vaccine but simply the number of new cases. Much like china has gone a few days now without new cases and has begun resuming things that had shut down. Had nothing to do with a vaccine or a cure. Of course, there's always a risk another outbreak could start, but there's so much money at stake, they will restart if at all possible and health experts deem it safe enough to do so.

MLS 2020 could happen. In what capacity? Who knows. Maybe they will cancel it all together, but I am not writing it off at this point.

Yeah, South Korea just restarted their baseball season because they were able to contain this. If we're able to (and judging by the incompetence in our government, I'm not optimistic), then our season might start again. But if we can't contain this, then there's probably no more soccer this year.

You cannot trust any thing coming out of China - this past week they tossed reporters for four major US newspapers out of the country for their reporting on Covid-19. China’s numbers are highly skeptical to begin with when compared to what’s happening in Europe. NYS isn’t supposed to hit peak for another 45 days, which then would have a backside slope, and the rest of the country is behind us. Add is that we have an entire Generation-of-Me that just got back from spring break who are most definitely carriers delivering the virus to areas of the country that had so far been “insulated” - as far as our non-existent testing didn’t confirm. Because of these dipshits, the US is going to have a massively longer outbreak with their communities very likely 3-6 weeks behind NYC.

So while South Korea has bossed this, we aren’t even close, and even if we were, it’d be idiocy to allow mass spectator events before we have a vaccine, know whether reinfection can take place, or have some way to limit exposure to those fortunate enough to have avoided it.

Figuring out how to have a 2020-2021 school year will need to come before spectator sports - losing a year of schooling, or a limited year, has more impact on society than whatever money is at stake in a sporting event.

You can believe what you will. We are all speculating here anyway, based on what we are told and what is reported. I have no doubt the US will be in this for a lot longer than SK or China and we'll be lucky if we can prevent an Italy level crisis happening. Luckily, the current epicenters in the US are taking this more seriously than others, with or without federal help. I firmly believe the US will have the most reported cases in the world when this is all said and done. That's if we continue to test and test aggressively. I find it disconcerting that NY and CA have instituted more restrictions as to who is being tested and I hope this is only temporary due to a lack of testing ability/capacity. At some point, there is no reason why we can't set up phonebooth testing facilities like south korea, so that anyone can just walk by and get tested.

As for your comment about the dipshits, I agree they are going to really screw a lot of people and places over. Not gonna lie, I wish they'd all get sick with nasty symptoms if only to teach them a life lesson.

Obviously, school comes before sports. I would hope sports would/could not continue if schools did not. However, sports can be played in empty stadiums and earn TV viewership/money. For STHs, I assume closed door games would qualify as a "cancellation" that could not be re-offered within 12 months and a refund would be justified. In any case, I personally think we won't even be close to single digit new cases until at least the end of June, assuming all states are testing in high numbers and people continue with social distancing. Assuming MLS is able to reschedule matches and go into mid-december, we could possibly play half a season or more, if closed door games are played. Regardless, whoever wins SS or MLS cup, it will always be tainted with an asterisk. I actually prefer they just scrap the season and start over 2021.

It's not a perfectly analogous situation to season tickets. As unlikely as it is, it is not logically impossible for NYCFC and MLS to supply 17 home games to season ticket holders. But every day you are charged for a gym membership when the gym is closed is a day you can never get back.
OTOH I'm somewhat sympathetic to the gyms here. They don't know how long this will go. They probably charged for March at the start of the month, not knowing they would have to close. Now they know they are closed at the start of April, but do not know when they can reopen.

Based on some of the twitter response it appears people are taking issue with the lack of communication from the club. A number of people have emailed asking to put a hold on payment and have received no response at all. I can sympathize with someone who is out of work and looking to save every remaining penny and not wanting to spend it on something that is currently irrelevant.

Absolutely. People deserve not to be charged. And poor communication from the gym is inexcusable.

Oh. My. God. Someone on my twitter feed replied to it as if it was NYCFC and I ran with it despite reading the story. I just assumed it was referring to us incorrectly because they don’t cover soccer and got it wrong. Major facepalm.

I’m in the process of trying to get my refund from Super Soccer Stars. They pushed the spring season start date back, but nothing is opening for a long time, not with social distancing on the long term horizon. So now they’ve rolled out video instruction via Zoom with the season beginning today.

Um, no. Absolutely not. That is not what I paid for, and my apartment is not suited for soccer in front of the TV or computer. I’ve emailed them multiple times and they’ve gone radio silent, never once replying with a response. Gonna call them Monday, and then make the call to AMEX.

I like the program, and feel bad that they can’t hold classes, but video instruction is not the same product and is a farce to push through.

My daughters' dance classes have gone this route as well for now, but have communicated that they will suspend payments if they are shutdown beyond the current may 4th date. MA has also given guidance that daycare providers can charge a proportion of their fees to ensure continuing operations, but our provider opted not to!

I signed up in February in good faith. I expect a program based on active physical participation and close quarter instruction to refund if that’s not possible. Video instruction is not remotely the same. And the presumptive nature of assuming somebody has the space and/or means to play soccer indoors is ridiculous. super Soccer hasn’t once floated the notion of refunds in any email - and have jubilantly been stalling and then pushing the video. I get it, they’re desperate, but they cannot deliver the product advertised or paid for.

And this product is far different than daycare. My nanny hasn’t been to work in weeks, because I want her to be safe looking out for her family, and as long as I have a job she will be paid for however long this goes on and people are supposed to social distance. But a soccer class is not the same, it’s an elective activity, and I’m a paying customer not receiving what was paid for, I have no obligations to them.

Edit: also, we stopped going to the last season about 3-4 weeks before the end because I didn’t want my daughter interacting- we were social distancing before it was vogue. And I chalked those classes up as missed because it was my choice to not go. But this being a new season, that hasn’t even started yet, we’ll, that’s just too far for Super soccer to assume they keep the registration money.

I agree they need to communicate better, but is a refund even possible? Do they have upfront expenses like field payments and equipment? Do they have any cash at the moment?
I'm not saying they shouldn't be giving refunds, but I suspect they are unable to do so. They should be upfront about it though.
What does your agreement say about cancellations due to weather/disaster etc?

There is zero mention of disaster. Weather can/will cancel class with a makeup. Refunds are possible before the 4th week, prorated, with a $35 administrative fee. There is no mention of having the authority or right to change to video instruction. Therefore, that $35 admin fee shouldn’t be enforceable as they’ve altered the agreement.

It’s a small business and generally a really good one. I hear you about how zoom just isn’t going to work for soccer.* Consider trying to get a rain check until summer or fall and letting them keep the money for now.

* - Zoom has worked quite well for my kids’ martial arts, and doing it has really helped their mood.

Why? We have no idea when this will be over. They didn’t have the decency to even suggest what you’re describing, they instead went with a bait and switch.

I don’t disagree it’s a good program, and I’ll go back, but I’ll pay when I go back, if and when another season is possible.

yes, but they said on 3/14 that they will "be suspending payment plans for this month and will re-evaluate in 30 days with further direction from MLS" and only spoke about the March payment
Yes but providing a date for an update is not IMO really different from "until further notice." Substantively, beyond a CYA "you never know" disclaimer, I'm confident they cannot resume payments this month. Five days after the 3/14 announcement MLS extended the play suspension to at least May 10. Nothing has happened since then to suggest MLS can hold to that, and once it goes further, there is even less likelihood of playing 34 games. I just don't think they can announce next week that they are resuming charges because MLS still plans to resume May 10 while MLB, the NBA and NHL will still almost certainly be on indefinite hold, and while their customers have not been given a date when they can go back to work or even leave the house.

Put another way, unless 30-40 governors announce -- in the next 7 days -- that they plan to relax stay at home rules before May 10, then MLS teams will not resume STH charges next week.
