The Athletic published a terrific article about how the salary release plays out among the players. I encourage you to read the whole thing (if you can), but I had to share this gem.

The salary list also occasionally gets weaponized on the playing field itself. [Bobby] Boswell tells a story that’s made the rounds around the league over the past few years, one backed up by a player who was on the field during the game he refers to. During the New York Red Bulls’ famed 7-0 rout of NYCFC in 2016—a match which took place just two days after the release of the union’s salary list—Red Bulls midfielder Felipe turned to English international Frank Lampard late in the match.

“So Felipe is running his mouth to Lampard,” Boswell recounts. “And he says ‘you’re washed up, you’re overpaid,’ and then he points at the scoreboard or something and says ‘look at the score man, look how badly you’re losing’”

Lampard, a player who was making $6 million for his services in 2016 and one who’d go on to make $5,882 per minute he was on the field for NYCFC over two seasons—was unbothered.

“I have $50 million in my checking account,” Boswell recalls the former Chelsea legend replying to Felipe. “I’m not losing.”

“What could Felipe even say at that point?” Boswell said. “He couldn’t say anything."

Quick fixes:

#1. Renegotiate Maxi to TAM territory next season
#2. Move Medina. Even at a loss.
#3. Mata + Sweat = $620k. Sign a chanot/Callens level player at that position and have a kid back him up.
#4. This will hurt cap bc he’s a HG. But give Sands a raise and long extension. That way we can maximize value when we’re forced to sell him to Europe. Don’t wait for his HG contract to expire to save a little cap room.

All together, not too bad besides not having a difference maker DP, including one spot being wasted. So much was fixed since year 1.
As much as renegotiating Maxi to TAM territory next season would be amazing, he's playing well above that level.

I would hope we get at least 1 more season of Sands, but if someone offered Tyler Adams $, I don't see how the club possibly says no. It's also unfair to the kid to keep him here and sets a bad precedent for the future if you do.

I think Adams went for only $4 million right?

Sands will go for at least double that, if only for NYCFC/CFG accounting purposes.

And the salary cap hit for a DP at $1.5 million in wages is easier to stomach than the engineering it takes to buy him down.

I mostly meant that in looking at other salaries across the league, he's still worth $2m IMO.

Sidenote:
  • Zlatan is the top paid player at $7.2m, Michael Bradley is the second highest at $6m, Schweinsteiger is 3rd at $5.6m.
  • Gyasi Zardes is making $2.26m this year
  • Prior to NYCFC collecting all of the wingers, Emma Boateng was one that I wanted us to go after, he's on $185k. I still like his game, especially at that cost, but considering our current roster makeup, and our formation(s) over the last 2 months, that doesn't seem to make much sense
  • Gio dos Santos was on $6.5m in guaranteed money this year and is still on MLS' books
  • And:

Hats off to the FO for getting this team on the cheap and looking like the best team in the East.

THAT SAID, I still think you need a big name in NYC. If we're going to consider 1/3 of our DPs being a risk and underperforming, I'd rather it be someone who will get the casual fan to come and cheer and sell a ton of merch. Get an expensive and noteworthy 9/10 at $5-7mil and have the other two on Mitri/Maxi contracts. It's always a worthwhile investment in NYC. The number of people who came out just to see Rooney and Schweinsteiger was impressive so long as they can be productive.

do they have to "buy" him down? IIRC his DP contract ends this year. so a new TAM agreements can be worked no?

Meant that if he signs back up with us for $1.5 Million, it would cost $1 million plus in TAM to have the same cap hit as a guy making $2 million.

I very seriously doubt we’re going to ever go the Zlatan route and use $1 million in TAM to buy down a salary. We’re already being smarter about it and using it for acquisition costs.

Davies numbers then?

They wanted him to go to U-20. They expected it. They wanted and pushed for him on the U-23s. They think his next camp very likely is Senior NT.

I say this because they expect his profile to increase exponentially and the offers will go from exploratory phone calls to offers. CFG will have a floor on the price and he will eventually go. That floor is going to be high single millions. The Adams deal was a joke. Created a false floor to the market. It may help current youngsters move because it artificially lowered the prices of comparable players. But it hurt mls.

Are we on the cheap though? Combined $13 million in transfer fees the last 16 months. That’s meaningful.

And I don’t think you’ll ever see a big name again unless CFG is paying the wages. Business model here is now entirely different than year 1. It’s all about the youth coming through and young foreign talent in ignored markets.

I've long thought we needed variety in our DP signings. One young DP; one in his mid-20s and reaching his peak; one big name in his early 30s who can draw fans and hopefully provide leadership in addition to high quality play.
