Sargent doesn’t provide positional flexibility like Lewis does. That’s the reasoning
Aren't they both pretty inflexible from a positional standpoint?

Unless you mean that Lewis provides something to this roster that nobody else currently does, and what Sargent brings is covered by other players?

Berhalter said that an injury to Lletget forced him to change his roster. He was expecting to take Sargent as a 3rd CF. Lletget goes down and he lost a guy that could play CAM and Winger.

Sands out 3-4 weeks. May not miss any MLS action. It sounds like a reinforcement is finally coming through from the Academy after about 6 months of waiting.

can they sign him now for the open cup? or is registration done for that too?

"Any changes to a team’s roster must be communicated to the Open Cup Commissioner and all clearances obtained, including approval from U.S. Soccer’s player registration department, no later than 2 p.m. CT on the first business day prior to any Open Cup match in order for such changes to be in effect for said match."

In case any NYCFC fans happened to be wondering for some reason, yes, it is possible to sell a benched DP for decent money:

Confirms my guess:
If I'm correct about that, then when you sell at a loss you should keep all the sale proceeds, but it probably just counts as regular cash not _AM.
From the article: "Because they won’t recoup all of the out-of-pocket cash payments they made to acquire and keep Horta on their roster, LAFC will not share any of the $2.75 million transfer fee with MLS, and will also not be able to convert any of the fee into general allocation money."

It’s refreshing that Bob Bradley/LAFC made the quick decision to cut bait when it was obvious the guy was not DP quality for their team, and doing so even while taking a loss. That shows they see the benefit of bringing in a real contributor regardless of the minor purse hit.
