2021 Roster Discussion

I based the "he's back" on the fact that Ronny was telling Crooks that he might be available for the game vs Orlando. This leads me to believe he should be ready and available vs Tigres. If not, I guess we will see Rocha or Acevedo (please not Gudi) in for Ring.
Hopefully he is on the bench, but I think a start vs. a team like Tigres as your first action back is not a great idea. Get him like 30 minutes at the end.

I think we only used five international slots in 2020, and one of them (GMS) is now free. So we currently have four international slots occupied and five open. Wonder if this is an early indication that we should expect more than just the two DP signings. Theoretically we have seven open roster spots at the moment.

i was going to say the oposite. i thought international spots "Expire" after a certain time and that we needed one for our roster to stay the way it is. i honestly lost track who has green cards and who doesnt.

EDIT: maybe we get man city loans again.

Our 9th spot expires at the end of the year which came from the Lewis trade.

I don't know how much sense this makes in terms of roster construction. We have heavy amounts of allocation dollars invested in our vet core. Besides the two DP slots, I have questions of how much we are actually going to be able to spend. It also doesn't make sense for our end-of-the-roster/depth spots to go to internationals, because we need those spots to start going to homegrowns for developmental and financial reasons.

I will say that 160k is a great price for an international spot. Could just be acquiring an asset below market rate. Portland needs allocation dollars to resign Mora.

Each team gets eight international slots every year automatically, though they can be traded in advance, so in any given year a team can have more or fewer even without any recent trades.

thanks i forgot what was the starting amount of International spots for each team.

Ronny told Roberto pregame that they team will not be afraid to spend this offseason, fwiw.

i dont think they are ever "Afraid" to spend, its more them not wanting to. like yes they can easily spend 12M-15M on someone but they ask "do i really want to spend for nycfc and not the mothership?"

I am worried who Ronny will want to spend on. He doesn't get complete control but he picks the 18 and sets the tactics.

Does his targets fit the mold of a tactically successfully team?

Does this mean Ronny's not going anywhere?

Norwegian left back Simen Jukleröd
I'll be very surprised if Ronny is not back in 2021. I'm wondering whether this guy is being looked at as a Thorarinson replacement, or a Matarrita replacement. Or in between, as in Thor is out and we let Mata and Juke fight it out. If we pay anwhere near $2.2M for him, it can't be just to sit behind Mata.

Gudi is under contract for next season (as is Mata). Unless we use the single offseason buyout, I can't see Gudi going anywhere. Maybe we just try and sell Mata and bring in this guy?

I think this season was so wacky and unusual that Ronny can't be blamed for the season. I want to see him with at least one full season and offseason in charge before passing judgment on him.

Agree that this guy, at that price, has to be competing with Mata for a starting spot. Or maybe Mata gets pushed up to winger and Juke comes in as LB with Thor as the backup LB. Frees up those DP spots for an attacking mid and striker or right winger.
