2021 Roster Discussion

I think this season was so wacky and unusual that Ronny can't be blamed for the season. I want to see him with at least one full season and offseason in charge before passing judgment on him.

Agree that this guy, at that price, has to be competing with Mata for a starting spot. Or maybe Mata gets pushed up to winger and Juke comes in as LB with Thor as the backup LB. Frees up those DP spots for an attacking mid and striker or right winger.
IM ok with this. Mata is good as a winger, not good as a LB. He adds some speed to the wing that is missing. Is this guy more of a stay at home defensive LB? I like a back 4 of new LB- Callens - Chanot - Tinnderholm. Ring - Parks then Mata, DP 10, DP RW, DP striker. Sands can come in as a CB or for Ring/Parks. Heber as a back up striker, Medina as a back up MF/RW. Ish as a back up RW.

I honestly think Mata is just as good at winger as he is at LB. The mistakes he makes higher up the pitch just won't result in goals given up.

I think it goes back to Mata's true position is as a LWB, as he plays for Costa Rica. Limit some of his defensive responsibilities while giving him the ability to just run up and down the left side. He's also not someone who is going to get into dangerous spots in the box and be a scoring threat, but someone who can stay down the left and send in dangerous crosses.

I don't really see how he best fits Ronny's system as a winger as Ronny wants his wingers to crash the box.

A few thoughts:

1. Ring's salary was $950K
2. He's a top 3 players in that position in the league
3. Belief in James Sands
4. Deila preferred the Parks-Sands midfield with Alex Wing
5. Did Claudio Reyna get a steal?

we're all assuming this Juke is a better left back than Mata. They are worth the same based on transfermarkt and at least we know what we're getting with Mata. The only way I'd see this Juke guy starting over Mata is if he is much more solid on defense. But we have no idea. And if GMS is any indication, it would seem that having history with Ronny means a lot and if we do sign him, it could mean he automatically takes the starting spot over Mata.

Yeah. Not sure what to make of this one. They better have some pretty good recruitment plans this offseason to reload.

holy shit its going to be a wild offseason ....no one is safe.

Edit: someone has to come in. unless they really banking on parks/ sands/ acevedo.

WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

ALEX RING TRADED TO AUSTIN FC!?!?!?!?

Man that sucks. Ring was one of the players you knew gave his heart and soul for the club. It is hard to see him go.

Also think we didn't get enough money for him...

I don't think anyone is assuming that. But if we go out and get someone his level I do think that means we would intend to play him. But sure, the club could be wrong.

The biggest read into that video is that there's going to be a lot of activity in these trade windows. That Vieira/Dome core from 2017-2019 is done.

Yea that's what Lee is saying. But will they make the right choices? I get that we have to make room, but a top d-mid in the league? Unless Ring wanted to leave, I don't see why the club would do this. I don't know the details on the financials, but I can't imagine there wasn't another way to make room?

The goodbye tweet on NYCFC twitter probably has the most reactions/replies in the last 3 years. Ring meant a lot to this club and its supporters. I'll say it again, he loved this club and while he wasn't the best clinical performer at times, he always put that effort in and I respected him for that. Man, gonna be hard to see a lineup without the Ringleader...

Wow. Did not see that coming. I think that is a fair bit of GAM actually, if we get the full amount. Even just $750k is not bad. I hope he is on board with this. I'm guessing yes, and it seems so from the statements. Also, his decision to get his surgery early and skip CCL has me wondering this was already in the works.

Agreed. It's gonna be a bumpy ride. Hopefully fruitful.

The Ring trade feels similar to LAFC trading Walker Zimmerman to Nashville:
  • Zimmerman: LAFC received $600,000 GAM in 2020, $350,000 GAM in 2021, int'l spot, and some incentives-based increases up to $150,000 GAM in both 2020 and 2021 for a possible total of $1.5 million
  • Ring: $500,000 GAM in 2021 GAM, $250,000 GAM in 2022, and incentive-based increases up to $500,000 (unspecified), for a total of
  • $750,000 GAM guaranteed up to $1.25 million [edited after LionNYC LionNYC caught my error]
I'm of the opinion that Nashville got the better of that trade this season. We'll see with Ring. The optics of trading your captain are strange -- thinking Red Bulls trading Dax as part of their re-build -- but maybe it will make sense as the roster is rebuilt/built out

Really interested in how much Ring is on board with this. Him and his wife just bought a house earlier this year.

There was a glut in midfield. At the start of the season, the forum was up in arms at Ring playing wing. This changed later in the year, but the change in large part was due to injuries to Moralez and Sands, allowing Ring to return to his natural position.

Entering 2021 it was poor resource management in a salary cap league to have Sands/Acevedo/Ring (above an beyond Parks/Moralez/Medina). Something had to give. Many suspected it would be Sands to Europe, but with the pandemic and another injury, the expected offers may have been too low. Instead, it was the 30 year old midfielder that recently had another knee surgery.

Ring will always be one of NYCFC's great players and for fan reasons it is disappointing to see him leave. But, from a team standpoint - a team that has two DP' slots to fill - was moving Acevedo or Sands a better option? That is the question to ask and answer.

It's 500K GAM in 2021 then 250K GAM in 2022 with $500K GAM in incentives should they be met.

$750K GAM guaranteed, $1.25M GAM max total.

This was honestly my first reaction. It looks like they are breaking up the core. They've given this group four chances at a trophy, and they haven't gotten it done. It's time for a refresh. No sense in running it back with this group again -- we've seen that they're not good enough. I wonder if Mata and Chanot are also being shopped, those seem to be the most likely players to go. I also think the forward group is going to see some major changes. Obviously our wingers just aren't good enough.

I honestly think this is a good sign that the team isn't just happy being a middle of the table, good enough to get in the playoffs but not good enough to win team. They want to win. This is a sign that the last four years, while fun and exciting, hasn't been good enough. It's a sign that they're going for it. You don't remove Alex Ring from this group unless you have some big moves up your sleeves.

It's also a sign that they think James Sands will be here next here. So I don't think they bring in another starting D-Mid, I think they ride with Sands/Acevedo and add some depth behind those two. I think this is about improving the attacking core and freeing up money to do that.

Watch that interview with David Lee. He said there will more lots more incoming "and outgoing" moves. We're in for a wild ride this offseason.

and LAFC defensively were not the same since, from what i read. well see how we rebuild...austin got a good deal as they probably have lots of GAM due to being new so this was a no brainer for them.
