Well, the operative word is National team player. LD hasn't been that for a while.

Do we really have use for Eirik as he takes up an international spot? I don't want Saunders, at all, but what is the point of having a valuable roster spot for someone who is going to get at most a couple appearances barring injury?

Also-- Hoping Jack gets a green card soon.

We really need to pick up a new USL affiliate. Johansen is a perfect guy to be loaned out for playing time and recalled next year when Saunders' contract expires. Rawls can stay here as a cheap emergency keeper.

This is a great question. I think, at his cap cost, we do have use for Eirik here. But if he isn't challenging for a starting position (I think we will have an open competition in camp actually), he needs to be expendable, even at his salary.

Can we not do that without an affiliate? Like is there some cheeky MLS rule against loans to USL unless they are affiliated?

One things for sure (and I have zero clue how intense other team fanbases are but) we've got to be one of the most prying fanbases in MLS, and we've met our match with this front office. We can't read them at all lately. Four keepers, an open DP slot, barely a fieldable 18, and a friendly in 40 days.

I'm really hoping for more of a RB/CB kind of possession guy than a 1-on-1 defender. We already have Mena on our bench for that. We need to replace all of Hernandez's minutes as a RB that slides into RCB when Matarrita pushes up.

Unless we switch to a permanent 3-man backline with inverted wingbacks to make up for our lack of a CDM?

Ugh, we are thin. We better have a big January.

I don't think RJ or Matarrita can make up for it. We would be a counter-attacking team's wetdream. Plus, I want Matarrita going forward and RJ too (when it presents itself). We need a real DM. Has to happen. A more conventional 3 in the back. 3-4-3 at home 3-4-2-1 on the road.

We have a lot of players at similar skill levels. If this keeps up, Viera is going to have to be the ultimate chess player this year.

Agreed. Just killing time on a slow day at work.

Speaking of killing time, anyone think Mix could reinvent himself as a stay-at-home DM?

Do I think that's his natural position, no, could he learn to play it, yes, should we give it a shot since he has the club by the balls and there aren't any takers, yes (unless we find another DMid - and then he should still be used in the midfield)

If he's on the roster at $750k, they sure as hell better try to play him. If they don't like his work rate and/or offensive impact, just have him sit where Iraola did. "Stand here and steal the ball if it comes your way. Fix your hair when we are on offense."

Exactly. It's time to swallow some pride and eat some crow because paying that salary with zero return is idiotic - the bluff was called and the club was only holding a pair of twos. When Mix is on the field the midfield can actually hold the ball since he can dribble, pass, & hold the ball in traffic and few on the team can say that.

I don't know if he has the strength tbh...not necessarily physical strength, more so as DM skill level holding strength.

I kind of like the way Mix plays with his manic all over the place style. I'd have him pressing the crap out of every touch. All you need is a few mistakes a game to try and capitalize on.

But maybe that's the problem. Maybe that's how Viera sees his game too and the rumor of his lack of fitness is true...he doesn't have the stamina to play to his strengths.

Of course there are some cheeky rules:

Loan of a Player by MLS
A club may loan any player from its Senior, Supplemental Roster or Reserve Roster to a non-MLS club at any time during the league year under consideration, subject to league discretion. During the loan period, the club will receive roster relief but not salary budget relief unless otherwise determined in the loan agreement.

If the player is recalled from his loan, the club must have an available roster slot in order for the player to be eligible for MLS games.

If the loaned player is an International Player, then his replacement may be an International Player and occupy an international roster slot.

Loan of a Player by MLS to USL Affiliate
  • All loans from MLS clubs to USL affiliates must be free (i.e. no loan fees paid by USL affiliate clubs).
  • In the event that an MLS player is loaned to a USL affiliate club, such player may not be paid in excess of the player’s MLS budget charge without that compensation being captured on the MLS club’s Salary Budget (including, but not limited to, performance bonus compensation).
  • An MLS club can receive roster relief and budget relief for a maximum of one player loaned to its USL affiliate; provided, however, that:
    • The player is under the age of 25 (i.e., he does not turn 25 prior to the end of the calendar year);
    • The player’s total compensation is less than or equal to the MLS Senior Minimum Salary (including any loan fees, transfer fees, agent fees, housing, car, etc.); and
    • The loan of the player to the USL affiliate must last for the duration an entire USL season; provided, however, that in the event that such loaned player is a goalkeeper, he may be recalled to his parent MLS club only in the case of Extreme Hardship.
